BLOG TOUR - The Lucky One

DESCRIPTION:

Ten years ago, I survived a serial killer. They called me the lucky one, but they don’t know the truth I’ve been hiding ever since…

Then: We danced together that night, our dresses glittering in the swirling lights. We couldn’t have known that for one of us, it would be our last night alive.

Now: Back in my hometown a decade later—the place I’ve avoided because of the memories—I can’t shake the feeling that I am being followed. I tell myself it’s all in my head, but the prickle on the back of my neck feels like a warning. Then the anonymous messages land in my inbox: I’m watchingI’ve been waiting for you.

I want to feel safe, surrounded by my closest friends. But everyone has something to hide and it’s impossible to know who I can trust.

When my friend Esme goes missing, her phone ringing through to voicemail, it feels like the past is about to repeat itself.

Someone won’t let me forget what really happened that night. What I promised. How I escaped. If the truth comes out, I only hope they can forgive me... I can’t make the same mistake again. I have to keep us all safe. What if, this time, I’m not so lucky?

An addictive, nail-biting psychological thriller, The Lucky One will have you sleeping with the light on. Fans of Stillhouse LakeThe Girl on the Train and Gillian Flynn will be totally hooked!

MY THOUGHTS:

Title:   The Lucky One
Author:  Jessica Payne
Publisher:  Bookouture
Genre:   Psychological Thriller
Format:  Kindle ARC
No. of Pages:   376
Date of Publication:   September 14, 2022
My Rating:   5 Stars

The Lucky One by Jessica Payne is one of the best cat and mouse chase stories I have ever read. In fact, this book was my absolute  favorite read for the month of August and just might be in my top favorites for 2022.

It has been ten years since Norah escaped a serial killer, and the memories are just as fresh as if it were yesterday. On that fateful day ten years ago, Norah and her friend August were abducted. Tragically, August was killed in short order, yet somehow Norah escaped. The police never found August's killer and Norah constantly finds herself looking over her shoulder. She has always remained remaining vigilant, as the killer promised he would be back for her.

Norah has been living in LA since that horrible experience. She has become a very successful MMA fighter and coach, thus gaining strength in a way to help assuage ongoing fears of that horrible night. She is currently back in Kansas which somehow triggers another murder, and again, this was a friend of hers that was killed, Esme. The killer seemed dormant for a decade and Norah and her friends are more than anxious to see what triggered the killer yet again. No doubt, Norah feels that her life is in danger once more.

Between the police and Norah's friends, the questions don't stop. And as this story develops, panning back to the past when the abduction occurs, a picture is painted for the reader. A dark, eerie picture showing how the past and present have clashed for Norah. In fact, while reading this book I was utterly enthralled. There are many books that are difficult to put down, and this one tops that list of books for me. I could not move until I read this book from cover to cover.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
