Doctor Rowan Dupont knows death. She grew up surrounded by it in her family’s Victorian funeral home. Now, the death of her father has brought her back to take over the family business.

DESCRIPTION:

Dr. Rowan DuPont and the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department are hunting a serial killer. All the victims have one thing in common--they could be Rowan's twin, except her twin sister is dead.

Rowan grew up in a funeral home, surrounded by death, so her keen insights into homicide cases seldom fall short of the mark. Though growing up as the undertaker's daughter made her acutely aware of life and all its frailties, she is only human. Will her one mistake in this shocking case be her last one?

MY THOUGHTS:

Serving as a profiler with the Nashville Police Department certainly kept Dr. Rowan DuPont busy, but was she fulfilled? Actually there was a huge missing piece in her life, and in this novella to The Undertaker's Daughter series, readers are introduced to her. Furthermore, it is made clear why she left her job and ended up at her family's funeral home.

Having grown up there, trained carefully by her father, well, it seemed clear that Rowan would follow in his footsteps. However, there was a tragedy that occurred and back home she went. What a fine basis for a new series by Debra Webb.

DESCRIPTION:

Nothing stays buried forever…

Doctor Rowan Dupont knows death. She grew up surrounded by it in her family’s Victorian funeral home, and it’s haunted her since the day her twin sister drowned years ago. Between her mother’s subsequent suicide and the recent murder of her father, coming home to run the funeral home feels fitting—even if it leaves her vulnerable to an obsessive serial killer.

Rowan refuses to let fear keep her from honoring her family. But the more time she spends back in Winchester, Tennessee, the more she finds herself questioning what really happened that fateful summer. Had her sister’s death truly been an accident? And what pushed their mother to take her own life? The dark lake surrounding Rowan’s hometown holds as many secrets as the bodies that float in its chilling depths. But Rowan is running out of time if she’s going to uncover the truth before somebody sinks her for good.

MY THOUGHTS:

Dr. Rowan Dupont is getting established again as she is now working at her family's funeral home. Things certainly have not been easy for her. She has suffered the tragic loss of her twin sister and her mother. More recently, however, her father was murdered, and this is what led her to leave her job as a profiler and to work again as an undertaker.

What is more, is that she is a bit of a detective. She not only seeks to discover what really happened to lead to her sister's death by drowning years ago, and also as to what really happened with her mother. This leads to danger coming to her very door. It is for a certainty that there were secrets from years ago and there is someone who will go to any lengths to stop her from uncovering the truth.

What a tense story! There is a serial killer on the loose, so the danger remains constant. I was riveted by this book. In addition to this, there is someone in Rowan's life from before, the town's police chief. Even with everything going on with Rowan, I was rooting for this couple who were blessed with a second chance.

I am glad that I found this series. Needless to say, I quickly went on to read the next book.

DESCRIPTION:

Nothing hurts like the truth.

Doctor Rowan Dupont knows a serial killer is coming for her. Julian Addington has been waiting. Watching. And it’s only a matter of time before he strikes. But what Julian doesn’t know is that Rowan is ready for him. And more than anything she wants answers. How well did the depraved killer actually know her mother? And how many lies have been spun in the years since she took her own life?

Working alongside her childhood friend Police Chief Billy Brannigan, Rowan is determined to get to the bottom of her mother’s puzzling suicide once and for all—even if it means exposing an unsettling past. It certainly seems like her family’s Victorian funeral home has borne witness to more than one dark secret, but when a recent double homicide leads to an even grislier discovery, separating the truth from the lies might be the last thing Rowan does.

MY THOUGHTS:

After reading the novella and the first book in this series, The Undertaker's Daughter and The Secrets We Bury, there was no way I couldn't go on to read this book! I only got this one for review, but gladly obtained the other titles. Well, Dr. Rowan Dupont was getting way too close to the truth of discovering secrets from years long past. Now she is in a serial killer's crossfire.

By now, Rowan has been working at her funeral home, all the while drawing closer to friend and police chief Billy Brannigan. Rowan cannot let her sister's drowning, and her mother's apparent subsequent suicide go. Then, there was the brutal murder of her father. She knows there was more to it. Things no one ever discovered. Could everything be tied to the very funeral home that she was raised in and that her father ran? Is her working there now going to expose a true barrel of rattlesnakes?

Oh boy! What Rowan unravels is unspeakable. Things went on for years, costing way too many lives. Rowan indeed has the key, no matter the danger facing her. I devoured all three books so far. I love Debra Webb's writing and how she kept me captivated three books in a row. Now, however, I have to wait for the next book, The Darkness We Hide, to be released in March. I will be (in)patiently waiting.

Many thanks to MIRA and to NetGalley for this ARC to review. This is my honest opinion.
