AUDIOBOOK REVIEW - Memory of Murder

Title
:   Memory of Murder
Author:  Debra Webb
Publisher:  Harlequin Intrigue
Series:  Colby Agency: The Next Generation #3
Genre:   Romantic Suspense
Format:  Audio ALC and Kindle ARC
Narrator:  Megan Tusing
Length:  5 hrs and 35 mins
No. of Pages:   224
Date of Publication:   September 30, 2025

DESCRIPTION:

Was her mother guilty?

A daughter needs to know.

Born to a jailed mother convicted of murdering her husband, Anne Griffin has tried to put her past behind her. The two were always painfully estranged. But when ace Colby investigator Jack Brenner arrives at Anne’s door with new evidence, she decides to help him reexamine the thirty-year-old cold case. One clue is the journal her now-deceased mother kept, vehemently claiming her innocence. But as Anne and Jack come closer to the truth—and each other—danger follows them. Someone wants a secret to stay buried.

Book 1: A Colby Christmas Rescue
Book 2: Alibi for Murder
Book 3: Memory of Murder
Book 4: Witness to Murder

MY THOUGHTS:

Anne Griffin, born to her mother in prison and raised in foster care, has built a successful life as a decorator. However, a knock on her door from Colby investigator Jack Brennan brings a box containing evidence that could prove her mother’s innocence of the crime of killing Anne’s father thirty years previously. Despite moving on from a less than ideal childhood, Anne questions if she can revisit the past. Will she allow Jack to work with her to potentially clear her now-deceased mother’s name?

A bit unsure at first, Anne does begin to work with Jack with the information he has. However, it becomes evident that someone is determined to prevent them from uncovering the truth about her mother’s case. Despite the decades that have passed, the lack of cooperation they receive from those they speak to is increasingly frustrating. As they spend time together, things quickly bloom between Anne and Jack, even as the intensity of their investigation deepens.

I have been enjoying this extension of the Colby Agency series. I love the emotional edge in this story, especially as Anne works on coming to terms with losing both of her parents, and no doubt wonders how differently her life could’ve been. This is a quick, suspenseful read, and I am very much, looking forward to reading the fourth book in the series, Witness to Murder

I’ve had this and the previous book as audiobooks, and the upcoming book for review is also going to be an audiobook. I have very much enjoyed Megan Tusing’s narration.

Many thanks to Harlequin Intrigue and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Review - Sunset Beach

Title:  Sunset Beach
Author May Kay Andrews
Publisher:  St. Martin's Press
Genre:   Romance; Women's Fiction
Format:  Kindle ARC
No. of Pages:  432
Date of Publication:  May 5, 2019
My Rating:   5 Stars
DESCRIPTION:

Pull up a lounge chair and have a cocktail at Sunset Beach – it comes with a twist.

Drue Campbell’s life is adrift. Out of a job and down on her luck, life doesn’t seem to be getting any better when her estranged father, Brice Campbell, a flamboyant personal injury attorney, shows up at her mother’s funeral after a twenty-year absence. Worse, he’s remarried – to Drue’s eighth grade frenemy, Wendy, now his office manager. And they’re offering her a job.

It seems like the job from hell, but the offer is sweetened by the news of her inheritance – her grandparents’ beach bungalow in the sleepy town of Sunset Beach, a charming but storm-damaged eyesore now surrounded by waterfront McMansions.

With no other prospects, Drue begrudgingly joins the firm, spending her days screening out the grifters whose phone calls flood the law office. Working with Wendy is no picnic either. But when a suspicious death at an exclusive beach resort nearby exposes possible corruption at her father’s firm, she goes from unwilling cubicle rat to unwitting investigator, and is drawn into a case that may – or may not – involve her father. With an office romance building, a decades-old missing persons case re-opened, and a cottage in rehab, one thing is for sure at Sunset Beach: there’s a storm on the horizon.

Sunset Beach is a compelling ride, full of Mary Kay Andrews' signature wit, heart, and charm.

MY THOUGHTS:

It is April 2018 and Drue Campbell takes a job with her esstranged father Brice Campbell, a personal injury attorney whom she has not seen for two decades. Not only will Drue be soon working alongside her father, but also an eighth grade classmate who is now her father’s wife. Her name is Wendy and she is the office manager at the small firm where Drue will be working. Awkward to say the least.

Drue really needs this job because her life has been turned upside down. Fortunately, she has a place to stay because she has inherited her grandfather’s cottage. While she settles into the cottage and the repairs that it most definitely needs, she soon learns that her job as an intake worker is simply not enough. She ends up, investigating a wrongful death case, and this puts her at odds with just about everyone.

This book by Mary Kay Andrews reminds me of a coming of age story when it came to Drue. Not only has she learned to really love herself, she also reconciled feelings for her father Brice that she thought were long gone.

Many thanks to St. Martin's Press and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

BLOG TOUR - Gone in the Night

DESCRIPTION:

Morgan tries to steady her trembling hands as she enters the abandoned tent in the shadow of the mountains. The woman once lay peacefully watching the stars in the glistening night sky. But she has been dead for some time…

When a farmer reports an abandoned campsite in Rydal Falls, Detective Morgan Brookes hopes its occupants are just out enjoying the beautiful views nearby. But nothing can prepare her for the smell of death in the air, or what she finds as she crawls inside the wind-ravaged tent. A young girl has been killed in her sleeping bag, her belongings ransacked, a knife twisted into her body.

Scrolling through beautiful images of solo wild camping on Sharon Montgomery’s social media, Morgan can’t imagine who would want the sweet girl dead. But then Sharon’s mother breaks down on arrival at the morgue, admitting through choked sobs that Sharon and her stepfather had a blazing row. And Morgan soon discovers that Sharon had a boyfriend, Jack, who did everything he could to keep their relationship a secret. Both men knew where Sharon was camping, but her autopsy report details more than thirty wounds on her body. Were they angry enough to do something so brutal?

When another girl is viciously stabbed while camping alone in another picturesque spot in the mountains, the team find delicate blue fibres at the scene that connect her and Jack. But Morgan isn’t convinced. Independent and single, Lydia Williams also had Lake District beauty spots all over her social media. Is someone trying to make sure all the women in town will be scared to venture out on their own? And can Morgan get inside this killer’s mind and track them down before they claim another victim?

An absolutely addictive crime thriller with a heart-pounding twist. Perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Lisa Regan and Rachel Abbott.

Perfect for bedtime stories, classroom read-alouds, or simply enjoying quiet moments together, The Orkney Chicken Saga is a wonderful addition to any child’s bookshelf.

TO PURCHASE:
One of my dear friends and her husband recently visited Scotland for a Special Convention. Despite their busy itinerary, they managed to create many cherished memories and make new friends on their journey. Among the delightful souvenirs they brought back was a charming little book titled The Orkney Chicken Sagawhich I was kindly gifted to review.

This delightful little book has many positive aspects. In fact, I was about to read it when two of my grandchildren arrived for the afternoon. Earlier that day, I had discovered the Wild Spark Publishing YouTube channel. The captivating video narration, perfect rhymes, and enchanting illustrations made it an ideal choice to share this charming story with my grandchildren.

How might this book be received by children and classrooms worldwide? I believe it has the potential to be incredibly popular, and I must say that the incredible illustrations play a significant role in this. Even non-readers are likely to be drawn to this book due to its vivid and captivating visuals.

Furthermore, this book affords the opportunity to work as an excellent teaching tool. It allows children to learn about different parts of the world and the fact that there are children like them everywhere. However, this book goes beyond being simply cute. It tells a true story about the Orkney Chicken Saga, which occurred in January 1952 due to devastatingly severe storm winds. While the book takes a lighter approach to this historical event, it can be a valuable resource for older children to discuss its impact on Orkney, Scotland.

As this is the first in a series of books with Charlie the Chicken, I hope that somehow these additional books get into my hands. As a lover of books, and more importantly, as a Nana, I would love to pass these wonderful stories along.

If you want to see why you might want to order this book for the littles in your life, please watch the cute animation video

MY THOUGHTS:
Like a puppet on a string, Corinne is forced to play a cruel game of cat-and-mouse due to her actions of five years ago. At the time she was dating Seth, but she could not avoid the powerful attraction she experienced when she met a handsome stranger at the gym named Mateo.

One bad decision quickly led to another, leading Corinne to instant regret. Corinne was determined to put her brief fling behind her. Presently, she and Seth are now married and are the parents to a four-year-old boy. Corinne knows she made the right decision to forget Mateo and to enjoy life with her little family. However, everything changes one night.

Corinne‘s family has always been close-knit. When her sister Georgia is excited to introduce her new boyfriend to Corinne and her parents, Corinne’s heart nearly stops. Georgia’s boyfriend is none other than Mateo. Feigning sickness, Corinne makes her escape that night. That is certainly not the end of things. Corinne is definitely dealing with the burden of guilt and this secret could ruin many lives. This is the least of her worries. In fact, Mateo intends on making her life a living hell.

A sudden deadline is given to Corinne by Mateo to tell her husband what happened. He begins to drag her along in a game of torment that has her frazzled beyond compare. Corinne has a game plan that shows her determination to protect her secret at all costs. However, this story has a chilling twist that makes this latest book by Daniel Hurst an utterly compelling read.

MY THOUGHTS:

Marie is more than a maid. Cleaning and cooking for Elizabeth is not the only she earns her income. Elizabeth’s mother-in-law Jane is paying her a good sum to spy on Elizabeth. Jane exerts significant influence over Elizabeth’s husband, Richard, and is eager to know everything that occurs within his household and between him and Elizabeth.

Soon everything begins to unravel, but not in the way Jane had imagined. Richard has gone missing and, while Jane feels that she was right that something just had to be less than ideal, the longer Richard is gone, the more panicked she becomes. Naturally, Elizabeth has her own frantic worries about Richard’s sudden disappearance. As far as Jane is concerned, image is everything, not just with Richard having gone missing, but simply because he married Elizabeth in the first place.

Marie’s role has now become even more crucial. Jane demands to know everything about Elizabeth and especially wants Marie to find evidence that somehow it was Elizabeth who drove Richard away. But, as Marie doesn’t miss a beat, it soon becomes apparent to the reader that a shocking twist is coming, and the twist takes a sharp turn. Marie might have been hired as a convenience to Jane, but there’s more at stake. Much more.

This captivating story by Willow Rose is multilayered, and unfolds primarily through the first-person perspectives of Elizabeth and Jane, spanning both the present and the past. However, Marie also has a voice, and this adds another excellent layer to this engaging story. And, while the reader might wonder more than once where Richard has gone to, the motivations of each of the women definitely comes into play.

BLOG TOUR - Murder in the Winter Woods

DESCRIPTION:

Julia Bird adores a walk on a winter’s day. The crunch of fresh show under your feet and the promise of hot cocoa by a roaring fire afterwards… But she’s not expecting to find a body in the woods!

It’s Christmas in Berrywick, the busiest time of year for dashing taxi driver Lewis. But when he’s killed in a road accident, the entire village is shaken. Julia Bird, recently appointed to the Road Safety Committee, visits the site so that no other villager suffers the same fate. But when she spies a pendant left in the bushes, she feels certain Lewis’s death was no accident…

As the festive lights twinkle in the village square, Julia vows to uncover the truth. She soon learns not everyone found Lewis’s charm appealing. Sweetshop ownerDora says he had an eye for the ladies, much to his wife’s frustration. Lewis recently gave his life savings to a mysterious businessman who proves difficult to track down. But could these be reasons enough to want him dead?

Then, local beekeeper Matthew is struck by a car near the Christmas market. Julia believes the two deaths must be linked, but contrary to Lewis, Matthew was as sweet as the honey he sold. Who could possibly want to hurt Berrywick’s kindest man?

With no obvious leads, Julia stumbles upon an old picture that finally links Lewis and Matthew. MY THOUGHTS:

If you are looking for a cozy mystery that feels warm and inviting, especially as the seasons are changing and the holidays are approaching, then you’ll thoroughly enjoy reading this eighth book in Katie Gayle‘s delightful series.

For Julia Bird and her neighbors in the charming village of Berrywick, they are preparing for a warm and festive Christmas celebration. However, things all but come to a screeching halt when of the villagers, Lewis, was found dead in what appeared to be a car accident.

Certainly, if there was anything that could ruin the festive holiday atmosphere, it would be Lewis’s death. As a new Road Service Committee was being formed, with Julia having an active role, she couldn’t shake the feeling that Lewis’s death was not an accident. As a rather effective amateur detective, Julia’s inquisitive nature wouldn’t rest.

Julia recognizes almost immediately that this was no accident, and that someone intended to kill Lewis. But why? Who could’ve possibly had any issues with him? While Julia certainly intends on doing her part to make the roads safer, if there is a killer about, she intends on stopping them.

Each book in this Julia Bird Mysteries series has been a delightful read, and the series continues to grow with fresh and engaging stories. As a woman “of a certain age”, I find it particularly enjoyable to have a protagonist around my age who is still embracing life, including her loving relationship with her boyfriend Sean. As always, the next book in the series is eagerly anticipated.
