DESCRIPTION:

It was a glittering event full of A-listers, hosted by Eliza Lane and Brant Fitzhugh, a celebrity couple who’d conquered both Hollywood and Broadway. And now Eve Dallas has made her entrance—but not as a guest. After raising a toast, Fitzhugh fell to the floor and died, with physical symptoms pointing to cyanide, and the police have crashed the party.

From all accounts, he wasn’t the kind of star who made enemies. Everyone loved him—even his ex-wife. And since the champagne cocktail that killed him was originally intended for Eliza, it’s possible she was the real target, with a recently fired assistant, a bitter rival, and an obsessed fan in the picture. With so many attendees, staff, and servers, Eve has her work cut out determining who committed murder in the middle of the crowd—and what was their motivation. As one who’s not fond of the spotlight herself, she dreads the media circus surrounding a case like this. All she wants is to figure out who’s truly innocent, and who’s only acting that way…

MY THOUGHTS:

Brant Fitzhugh has fallen to his death, and quite naturally, his widow is traumatized. She is certain he was murdered but cannot imagine why. Detective Eve Dallas is on the case. Was he the intended victim, or was his wife Eliza the actual target? Cyanide poisoning in a glass of champagne was the cause of death.

Brant was well-liked. His death makes absolutely no sense. He was happily married. Both Brant and Eliza are in the entertainment business. With the harmony in their marriage, their schedules were usually in sync. However, Brant has a project that will take him away to New Zealand for six months. Eliza will be playing a role in a revival of successful play on Broadway so she cannot travel with Brant.

In the case of the In Death series, Nora Roberts has written it under her pseudonym, J. D. Robb. I just love her books and have read every single book in this series, including the two that follow, Payback in Death and Random in Death.

Everything about this book is wonderful. Whether the drama of discovering who murdered Brant, to Eve and husband's Roarke's amazing relationship, from Eve's relationship with her coworkers, most notably, Peabody, this book packs a wallop. Then I love Eve's sense of humor, and her level of snark, and how she often wonders aloud why certain phrases are what they are - like why is a driveway called a driveway.

With a delightful mystery, great characters, solid intrigue and a conclusion that one might not expect, this book definitely rated a solid five stars.

Many thanks to St. Martin's Press and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

DESCRIPTION:

Lt. Eve Dallas is back and this time she's investigating the death of one of her own.

When a retired police officer is found shot dead in his home, Eve and the team are called to the scene to investigate. The victim is Martin Greenleaf, former Captain of Internal Affairs. At first glance it looks like suicide but Eve thinks there could be more to this carefully laid scene than meets the eye.

Captain Greenleaf put a lot of cops away during his forty-seven years in Internal Affairs. Did the weight of the job finally prove too much for him? Or could this be a case of payback in death...

MY THOUGHTS:

Three years married, Lieutenant Eve Dallas and Roarke visit his home country of Ireland for a short visit. Now back home in New York, Eve is called onto the case of an unattended death of Martin Greenleaf. Martin was a retired cop and was the captain of internal affairs. From the outset, suspects include some of the officers that had to stand before him due to misconduct.

Martin's wife is beside herself and the two had a terrific marriage. She had gone out for the evening with a friend, and Martin was going to have a visit from another police officer, who is almost immediately not considered to be a suspect.

Eve, with the help of Roarke, and her partner Peabody, dive headfirst into the case, and do the best they can to find out who killed Martin.

This book and the entire series by J. D. Robb, Nora Roberts' pseudonym, was yet another example of fabulous writing. The characters were great, the intrigue was compelling and the twists were timed perfectly.

Title:  Random in Death
Author:  J. D. Robb
Series:  In Death #58
Publisher:  St. Martin's Press
Genre:  Mystery/Thrillers
Format:  Audiobook ALC
Length:  13 hr
Narrator:  Susan Erickson

DESCRIPTION:

In the new crime thriller from #1 New York Times-bestselling J.D. Robb, a small and easily concealed weapon wreaks havoc, and the killer is just a face in the crowd.

Jenna’s parents had finally given in, and there she was, at a New York club with her best friends, watching the legendary band Avenue A, carrying her demo in hopes of slipping it to the guitarist, Jake Kincade. Then, from the stage, Jake catches her eye, and smiles. It’s the best night of her life.

It’s the last night of her life.

Minutes later, Jake’s in the alley getting some fresh air, and the girl from the dance floor comes stumbling out, sick and confused and deathly pale. He tries to help, but it’s no use. He doesn’t know that someone in the crowd has jabbed her with a needle—and when his girlfriend Nadine arrives, she knows the only thing left to do for the girl is call her friend, Lieutenant Eve Dallas.

After everyone on the scene is interviewed, lab results show a toxic mix of substances in the victim’s body—and for an extra touch of viciousness, the needle was teeming with infectious agents. Dallas searches for a pattern: Had any boys been harassing Jenna? Was she engaging in risky behavior or caught up in something shady? But there are no obvious clues why this levelheaded sixteen-year-old, passionate about her music, would be targeted.

And that worries Dallas. Because if Jenna wasn’t targeted, if she was just the random, unlucky victim of a madman consumed by hatred, there are likely more deaths to come.

MY THOUGHTS:

Justice for Jenna. That is what Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her loving and yummy husband Roarke want. The teen was at a concert and received a deadly injection. Eve is determined to find Jenna's killer, especially once it is discovered what was in the concoction that killed Jenna. Other victims just might be in danger, so Eve is in a race against time.

Susan Erickson narrated this wonderful novel. I am thinking that she just be among my top favorites of narrators. I love how she manages the voices of all of the characters, especially when humor is threaded through the pages of this book.

The In Death series is top of the line, and it would be to anyone's advantage to read or listen to the books in order. Never fear, most libraries have this series, as will as Audible and multiple other formats. Put this book, Abandon in Death, and the entire series in your TBR. I promise that you will not be disappointed.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Nora Roberts was born in Silver Spring, Maryland, the youngest of five children. After a school career that included some time in Catholic school and the discipline of nuns, she married young and settled in Keedysville, Maryland.
She worked briefly as a legal secretary. “I could type fast but couldn’t spell, I was the worst legal secretary ever,” she says now. After her sons were born she stayed home and tried every craft that came along. A blizzard in February 1979 forced her hand to try another creative outlet. She was snowed in with a three and six year old with no kindergarten respite in sight and a dwindling supply of chocolate.
Born into a family of readers, Nora had never known a time that she wasn’t reading or making up stories. During the now-famous blizzard, she pulled out a pencil and notebook and began to write down one of those stories. It was there that a career was born. Several manuscripts and rejections later, her first book, Irish Thoroughbred, was published by Silhouette in 1981.
Nora met her second husband, Bruce Wilder, when she hired him to build bookshelves. They were married in July 1985. Since that time, they’ve expanded their home, traveled the world and opened a bookstore together
Through the years, Nora has always been surrounded by men. Not only was she the youngest in her family, but she was also the only girl. She has raised two sons. Having spent her life surrounded by men, Ms. Roberts has a fairly good view of the workings of the male mind, which is a constant delight to her readers. It was, she’s been quoted as saying, a choice between figuring men out or running away screaming.
Nora is a member of several writers groups and has won countless awards from her colleagues and the publishing industry. Recently The New Yorker called her “America’s favorite novelist.”
