Amy has been dreading her evening working on Ward D, the hospital’s inpatient mental health unit. There are very specific reasons why she never wanted to do this required overnight rotation. Reasons nobody can ever find out.
And as the hours tick by, Amy grows increasingly convinced something terrible is happening within these tightly secured walls. When patients and staff start to vanish without a trace, it becomes clear that everyone on the unit is in grave danger.
Amy’s worst nightmare was spending the night on Ward D.
MY REVIEW:
Amy Brenner is a third-year medical student who is doing a psychiatry rotation on a locked ward for 13 hours. Just 13 hours. It’s overnight, and part of that time she should be able to sleep, yet hour after hour she just might wonder how long the night really will be.
There are definitely complications with this shift that Amy is about to work. For one thing, she has some familiarity with the psych ward as her best friend Jade was committed when they were both 16 years of age. Due to Jade’s hospitalization at that time, Amy and Jade’s friendship had dissolved. Furthermore, Jade made a statement about Amy state of mind then that still bothers her. Factor this. Jade is on the ward that Amy is working, Ward D. No longer friends by any stretch of the imagination, at the very least Amy just wants to get through the night.
There are several patients on the ward. In fact, one who is said to be very dangerous is secluded in a room that should hold that person captive until morning. As long as that individual stays behind that locked door, Amy, the doctor and the nurse, as well as the other patients, should be safe. Meanwhile, while Amy struggles to get through the night, she also struggles with something that makes her question her own sanity.
This is truly a locked room thriller. In these types of books it is perfectly clear that someone or more than one person will not make it out alive. Freida McFadden raises the level of fear at a threatening level, and then with a secret that Amy is hiding, the tension in this book never lets up for one second. Will Amy and the others survive the night? Well, in this captivating, addicting, thrilling, exciting book, I dare any reader to put this book down for one second without finding out what happens, especially as the book races to a shocking finish.
#1 Amazon bestselling author Freida McFadden is a practicing physician specializing in brain injury who has penned multiple Kindle bestselling psychological thrillers and medical humor novels. She lives with her family and black cat in a centuries-old three-story home overlooking the ocean, with staircases that creak and moan with each step, and nobody could hear you if you scream.
