Review - Almost Just Friends

Author:  Jill Shalvis
Series:  Wildstone, #4
Genre:   Romance
Publisher:  William Morrow Paperbacks
Format:  Kindle ARC
No. of Pages:   384
Date of Publication:   January 21, 2020
My Rating:  4 Stars

DESCRIPTION:

New York Times bestselling author Jill Shalvis returns to Wildstone with the touching story of finding your place in the world—and the people who make it home.

Piper Manning’s about as tough as they come, she’s had to be. She raised her siblings and they’ve thankfully flown the coop. All she has to do is finish fixing up the lake house her grandparents left her, sell it, and then she’s free.

When a massive storm hits, she runs into a tall, dark and brooding stranger, Camden Reid. There’s a spark there, one that shocks her. Surprising her further, her sister and brother return, each of them holding their own secrets. The smart move would be for Piper to ignore them all but Cam unleashes emotions deep inside of her that she can’t deny, making her yearn for something she doesn’t understand. And her siblings…well, they need each other.

Only when the secrets come out, it changes everything Piper thinks she knows about her family, herself…and Cam. Can she find a way to outrun the demons? The answer is closer than she thinks—just as the new life she craves may have already begun.

MY THOUGHTS:

Piper Manning has put her life and dreams aside to raise her brother and sister after the loss of their parents. She has one last thing to do until her life is her own - and that includes getting the coveted college degree as a physicians assistant. She needs to do a lot of work on the lake house left to her by her grandparents. Once she is able to sell it, she can go back to school.

When Piper runs into a man during a big storm, named Camden Reid, sparks fly right off. However, she certainly has no time for romance. To further complicate things, her brother and sister come back to the lake house needing her help yet again. Piper has always been selfless, so what will she do now?

Jill Shalvis is a favorite author of mine so I am glad I got the chance to read this book. I quickly learned that this wasn't a cut-and-dried romance. Boy meets girl. Fall in Love. Major conflict. Happily ever after. Instead, both Piper and Cam had heavy baggage. Piper's sibling brought heavy baggage to Piper's feet. These things are part of the reason that this book was a really sensitive read that stressed the importance of family and love. Yes, readers got the happy ending, but the journey towards it was a rather nice ride.

Many thanks to William Morrow Paperbacks and to Edelweiss for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

I was born and raised in Manitoba, Canada.  I attended the University of Manitoba where I earned a graduate degree in veterinary physiology and spent many years happily working as a research scientist in the agriculture industry.  None of which, of course, has anything to do with writing romance novels.

My writing stemmed from my lifelong obsession with history, a weakness for a good love story and after my first child was born, I sat down to do what I'd also wanted to do - write a novel.  (The entire process being facilitated by the abundance of winter months that can be found in this particular province).

Currently, I live in Winnipeg with my husband and two boys who are wonderfully patient and supportive of the writing process.  Except, that is, when they need a goalie for street hockey.

Please enjoy the following excerpt:

As I stood in the doorway, I took in the bar. It had a decent-size crowd considering it was a Tuesday night. The mix of patrons was as eclectic as the decor. It was all very Kody. The building was an old barn, so the interior had a lot of western elements, including old whiskey barrels for tables. But there were also brightly colored artwork and neon signs brightening up the space. Instead of the big lighting fixture in the middle of the bar being made out of antlers or wrought iron, it was an intricate mix of colorful glass beads. The whole thing was very country and western meets boho chic. The people filling up the seats were mostly Loveless residents. They included the guys gathered near the bar dressed in leather, covered in tattoos, and rocking club colors. The Sons of Sorrow motorcycle club had moved into the hill country on the outskirts of Loveless years after I’d left town. Now their flashy bikes and intimidating presence were as commonplace as pickup trucks and horse trailers. It made sense they liked Kody’s bar since it was between town and their clubhouse, but I didn’t have to like it.

I really didn’t like the way the large, dark-haired man leaning across the bar looked at Kody. I knew from Case that Palmer “Shot” Caldwell was the current president of the Texas branch of the club. I’d taken it upon myself to learn more about the man when he ended up in the middle of the last case that brought me home. Shot was a former marine, a decorated sniper, the son of the founder of the club, and someone Kody was inexplicably close to. Everything about her relationship with the biker set my teeth on edge and had me wanting to make a claim I had no right to stake.

As I stepped forward, the heavy wooden door shut with a bang behind me and drew the eyes of the people sitting closest to me. I saw a couple of looks of recognition, and some people purposely looking away. I nodded and touched the tip of my finger to the brim of my hat in a fairly polite greeting. These people weren’t my friends. No one in this town had tried to help my brother when he needed it the most, and I would never forget that. Unlike the Lawton kids, I’d left Loveless in the rearview mirror and planned on never looking back. All of my worst memories were here. So was the one person I wanted more than anything but knew I could never have.

Under the dim bar lights, I met Kody’s gaze across the room. She looked pale. Her wild mane of multicolored blond hair was messier than usual, and she appeared to be swaying slightly every time she let go of her hold on the bar. Her eyes narrowed, and at first, I thought she was giving me a dirty look, but the next instant her entire body lurched and she toppled over, listing to the side and disappearing behind the wide, long bar.

My heart stopped for a split second and I had to bite my tongue to stop from screaming her name. I found myself in dangerous, deadly situations due to my job, but I couldn’t recall a single instance when I had been as terrified as I was in that moment Kody went down.

I heard the biker shout her name and was vaguely aware of him kicking back his bar stool as he jumped to his feet. I was moving before I had time to weigh whether it was a good idea. Kody didn’t like it when I was in her space. She’d told me she hated me and ordered me to leave her alone on more than one occasion, but none of that stopped me from reaching the bar in record time. It didn’t slow me down when I planted a hand near the biker’s empty drink and vaulted over the top of the bar.

I landed on the floor in front of Kody, ignoring the shouts and commotion coming from all directions. I waved off the bartender hovering uncertainly behind Kody and quietly asked, “Are you okay, Kody?”

The answer was obvious when, instead of biting my head off, her big, bright-green eyes flooded with tears and her shoulders started to shake with silent sobs. Having people burst into tears as I was talking to them, was a pretty common occurrence considering my line of work. I’d developed a natural immunity to tears of all kinds. But not to Kody’s. Hearing her breath catch and watching her eyelashes get spiky and damp as she struggled to hold the tears back made my heart twist painfully in my chest.

MY THOUGHTS:

Title:   Unforgiven
Author:  Jay Crownover
Genre:  Romance
Series:  Loveless, Texas #2
Publisher:  Forever
Format:  Digital ARC
No. of Pages:   432
Date of Publication:   February 25, 2020

In the second book of the Loveless, Texas series, Hill Gamble is a Texas Ranger assigned to investigate the death of Kody Lawton's father. Kody would rather have anyone other than Hill asking her delicate questions when she is torn about her father's death.

Kody's father was formerly the town's sheriff and was as corrupt and evil as they come. Neither Kody nor her two brothers were close to their father and had as little to do with him as possible. His death, however, nearly breaks Kody. Now she must deal with the fact that Hill is back in her life. Their history is very difficult, and their challenges are nearly impossible to overcome.

Having read the prior book in this series, Justified, I was drawn into the Lawton family. Kody's brothers, Case and Crew, are in this book and that is just the type of continuity I like. But, for the meat of the story, beyond the inevitable romance that explodes between Kody and Hill, is the mystery of her father's death. In addition to that, there is a solid build-up regarding the connection between Kody and Hill, and this brings into play Kody's tragic past.

This was a great story. However, there is a character that played an important role in this book and  readers are left in the lurch regarding what happens to him. This all but guarantees at least third book in this series. I am definitely looking forward to that and whatever else Jay Crownover has on tap.

Many thanks to Forever and to InkSlinger PR for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Review - Photos of You

Title:   Photos of You
Author:  Tammy Robinson
Genre:   Women’s Fiction
Publisher:  Forever
Format:  Print ARC
No. of Pages:   352
Date of Publication:   February 18, 2019
My Rating:   5 Stars

DESCRIPTION:

A compassionate, uplifting love story for fans of Me Before You.

When Ava Green turns twenty-eight, she discovers this will be her last birthday. The cancer she thought she'd beaten three years ago is back, only this time it's terminal: and she's not going to waste any of the time she has left. There's one thing she's been dreaming of since she was a small girl: her wedding. There's only one problem. She doesn't have a groom.

Her friends and family rally around her and decide they will help her throw the wedding of her dreams, just without the actual vows. A mammoth organisation begins. As word spreads, people offer help. In an uncertain time, the whole country seizes the story of a woman whose dying dream is simple, and they unite to give her a wedding to remember. But when a photographer called Lucas Gable volunteers to help document the whole event, it becomes painfully clear that it's never too late to discover the love of your life.

MY THOUGHTS:

The few words on the front cover of this book as well as the photographs clearly showed that this would be an emotional read. I received this book from the publisher and because I receive so many print arcs it probably went on my bookshelf. I have to apply to a friend of mine who also gets these and told me that this was a tearjerker which was no surprise but also a five star review.

I have to agree with her completely. Having had very close relatives, including my parents that have succumb to this horrible disease I knew that reading this story would be tragic. I knew that it could break me. There are a lot of books that I will not read because of possible triggers. And just as I imagined, I was indeed triggered, yet I kept on reading it because it was impossible to put down.

Ava Green beat cancer. However that disgusting disease has a tendency to come back in some cases. That is what happened to her. She is 28 years old and will not live to see her 29th birthday. The disease is now beyond treatment.

Most of us have dreams as children. Ava’s biggest dream was to have a beautiful wedding. Despite the fact that there is no groom, her friends and family stand by her and help her plan the day of her dreams. They pull out all the stops and soon a magazine is involved. When the magazine photographer Lucas Gable meets Ava, both of their lives are changed forever.

I think this is a book that needs to be read. We are all affected by cancer in one way or another. Hopefully this book will gain the traction it needs in order for us to be reminded to make the most out of our lives. Tammy Robinson has written this book in an incredibly touching manner. I loved the writing style as well as the full on commitment and unyielding love Ava was fortunate to have experienced. This book just might be my top read of 2020.

Many thanks to Forever for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

BLOG TOUR - When We Were Brave

Today is my post for the Blog Tour for When We Were Brave by Suzanne Kelman.

DESCRIPTION:

The face of woman in the photograph was tilted upwards, as if enjoying the sunshine just for a moment, even as the wreckage of the bombed-out street lay behind her…

1944, Cornwall:
Blinded by love, Vivienne Hamilton eloped to Paris with a Nazi prisoner-of-war, never to be seen again. A disgrace to her family, her name would not be mentioned by any of her relatives for over 75 years.

Present day, London: When Sophie discovers a photograph of her great aunt Vivi from World War Two, it throws her into a world of confusion. Because, as she learns about this secret relative, she quickly realises that the photograph doesn’t fit with her family’s story. It shows Vivi leaving an address associated with a spy network in London – a place she had no reason to be – and it is dated right before she disappeared.

Meanwhile Sophie’s own life feels as blasted and bombed as the Blitzed city in the photograph she’s looking at. Her beautiful daughter – as full of joy and wild energy as Vivi had apparently once been – is gone; and Sophie’s heart has been left broken into pieces.

Retreating to the family home in rural Cornwall to seek solace from her pain and the feelings of guilt that she could have done more to protect her daughter, Sophie finds herself becoming obsessed with Vivi’s life.

But nothing can prepare Sophie for what she is about to uncover – the story of a woman who risked everything for the person she loved the most; and a secret family history that could be the key to Sophie’s own future.

A powerful, haunting and unforgettable read about love, heartbreak and betrayal set in Second World War Britain and France. Perfect for fans of The Nightingale, Under a Scarlet Sky and My Name is Eva.

Historical Fiction seems to be my go to these past months, and When We Were Brave ranks right up there at the top. This affecting story is told in both 1944 Cornwall and present day London. Sophie finds a photograph of her great-aunt Vivi from World War II. This is very confusing to Sophie because this picture and the memories she has been told her entire life do not match up.

During the war, Vivienne Hamilton eloped to Paris with a Nazi POW. This was something her family was ashamed of, and that is why. until Sophie happened upon the picture, Vivi's name had never been discussed.

Sophie studies the photograph, and she gets help when she can, and it becomes more and more evident that Vivi's story was simply one of love. It seems more and more that Vivi was involved in so much more, and that might be why she apparently disappeared. As Sophie has taken her questions to Cornwall, and talks to various people secrets are coming to light.

Whether the story was being told in the past, or in the present, I was captivated throughout. The war effort was at full swing, and the spy network had an amazing agenda, as it turned out. Sophie's story was intriguing as well. In great fashion, Suzanne Kelman has penned another fantastic story.

When reading historical fiction there is always something to learn about during that period of war. In this case it was the complicated spy network, the British SOE. Just as I will never forget the other book I read by her, The View Across the Rooftops, this is one I will not forget either.

BLOG TOUR - The Tuscan Girl

Today I am part of the Blog Tour for The Tuscan Girl by Angela Petch.

DESCRIPTION:

She ran away through the pine trees when the soldiers came. Staggering into the hiding place, she felt a fluttering in her belly, like a butterfly grazing its wings, and knew instantly she had something to fight for.

Present day: When her fiancé is tragically killed in an accident, twenty-six-year-old Alba is convinced she’s to blame. Heavy with grief and guilt, she flees to her childhood home – the tiny village of Rofelle, nestled in a remote Tuscan valley. Out hiking one day to fill the long, lonely hours, she finds a mahogany box filled with silverware, hidden near the vine-covered ruins of an isolated house left abandoned after World War II. Could finding the rightful owner ease Alba’s heartache, and somehow make amends for her own wrongs?

In search of answers, Alba meets Massimo, an elderly man who wants to spend his final years pruning his fruit trees, alone with his painful memories. His face turns pale when Alba brings up the war, but she senses that their shared grief connects them. An unlikely friendship grows as little by little Massimo speaks of Lucia: a wild young girl with sparkling eyes who fell in love with an enemy soldier, bravely stole precious Italian treasures back from Nazi occupiers, and whose selfless courage and sacrifice altered the course of the war – and Massimo’s life.

With each visit, Alba gets closer to unravelling the mystery of the silver, and they both start putting their ghosts to rest. But there’s one part of Lucia’s story that Massimo might never be able to share – and he’s running out of time. Has Alba churned up emotions that are too painful to ever confront? Or, will unearthing a wartime secret that has lain buried for generations finally bring Massimo peace?

An absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking read that will sweep you away to the rugged mountains and lush olive groves of Tuscany. Fans of The Nightingale, Rhys Bowen and Julianne MacLean will be captivated.

Alba is devastated and plagued with guilt when her fiancé is killed in an accident. She thinks she will be able to regroup by heading to her childhood home in a very small village in the Tuscan valley. When she discovers a box filled with silverware, near the ruins of a house abandoned after the second World War, she finds direction. She wants to find the owners of the silverware.

One of the people she meets is an elderly man named Massimo. When Alba is speaking with him, the pain and sadness is evident in his face. Alba cannot let go, however, and speaks to Massimo yet again. The two find make a connection in their grief. More and more Massimo trusts Alba and he begins to tell her of a young girl he knew during the war named Lucia. This is where the story often switches to the past. Lucia was a brave young woman and changed Massimo's life forever.

What a mystery to be solved. However, it is heartbreaking. As the horrors of the war grew close to Lucia and Massimo they were not happy-go-lucky young lovers. Their love was fraught with heartbreak and danger. Alba finds ways to help Massimo to recount these memories, although it is clear his life cycle is nearing its end. I do love the decisions each of the main characters made throughout the story, but especially Alba.

The Tuscan Girl is a touching story that touches on yet a different aspect of the war. It never ceases to surprise me as I continue to read historical fiction novels on how many ways lives were affected and forever changed.  I did read The Tuscan Secret previously by Angela Petch and I fell in love with Tuscany then. She did another fantastic job of making the characters and the settings feel real to me. I enjoy her writing and look forward to reading much more as time goes on.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Review - Summer on Moonlight Bay

Title:   Summer on Moonlight Bay
Author:  Hope Ramsay
Series:  Moonlight Bay #2
Genre:   Romance
Publisher:   Forever
Format:  Kindle ARC
No. of Pages:  368
Date of Publication:  August 6, 2019
My Rating:  4 Stars

DESCRIPTION:

Only one thing can make veterinarian Noah Cuthbert return to Magnolia Harbor-his mother's failing health. He'll do anything to help his family, including taking a short-term gig at the local animal clinic. What he doesn't count on is getting up-close-and-personal with the clinic's new manager, a woman whose love and compassion for every stray that crosses her path has him rethinking his plans to head back to his big-city life...

After her time in the Navy, Lia wants nothing more than to settle down. The quaint seaside town is just what she'd been hoping for, and not just because her new boss is movie-star handsome. As they grow closer, Lia starts wondering if Noah could be the one. But when a town crisis forces Noah to take a stand that jeopardizes their new-found happiness, can Lia convince him that home doesn't have to be a four-letter word?

Includes the bonus novel Then There Was You by Miranda Liasson!

MY THOUGHTS:

Lia DiPalma always thought she'd be a lifer with the Navy. Having served an extended time, circumstances have changed and she is about to undertake civilian life. She travels to Magnolia Harbor and hopes to become a church secretary with one of her Navy buddies who is now a chaplain in a parish there in South Carolina. Her plans are derailed when she accidentally hits a dog with her car. She then rushes the dog to the nearest vet clinic.

The only person that seems to be able to help Lia with the dog is visiting veterinarian Noah Cuthbert. He only plans on being in Magnolia Harbor long enough to see about his mother's health and plans on taking her back home with him. However, his help is needed at a new vet clinic so he will be around for awhile. This is how he meets Lia when she brings the dog in for emergency treatment.

As things turn out, Lia's situation is dire and she needs a job and a place to say immediately. It might take a bit of time before the church can hire her so she helps Noah set up the clinic. Sparks fly from almost their first meeting and the more time they spend together, the more it seems that they are perfectly suited for each other. However, Lia is there to stay. Noah is itching to leave.

This warm love story by Hope Ramsay is the second book in the Moonlight Bay series. I loved Lia and Noah together, and enjoyed the strong sense of family values. This book is preceded by The Cottage on Rose Bay. The third book in the series is Return to Magnolia Harbor, which is set for publication in June.

Many thanks to Forever for this ARC to review. This is my honest opinion.
