BLOG TOUR - I Know Your Secret

Today is my stop on the Blog Tour for I Know Your Secret by Ruth Heald.

DESCRIPTION:

You’re not who you say you are. Neither is she.

She thinks she knows me.

She believes my marriage is falling apart at the seams, that my husband can barely look me in the eyes. She thinks I’m desperate for a baby, that my longing for a family keeps me up at night. As much as I hate to admit it, all of this is true.

She thinks I listen to her advice, that I care about her opinion. That couldn’t be further from the truth.

Because she has no idea who I am. She has no clue that I know everything.

I know her secret. I know that she did the unforgivable. I know how many lives she ruined.

I know exactly what she did. And I’m here for her.

An utterly gripping, addictive and shocking read about the dark secrets we’re ashamed to admit, and the lengths people go to for revenge. Fans of K.L. Slater, My Lovely Wife and The Wife Between Us will be racing through the pages, gasping at the twists, and reeling from the explosive ending of this unmissable page-turner.

Genre:   Psychological Thriller

No. of Pages:   278

Two lives based on events of the past. Two women who are not who they say they are. Life appears perfect for one and a bit unstable to the other. When they converge, is it by accident or by design?

The women are Beth, a marriage counselor who has a young child and who has been recently dumped. Then we have Danielle, a woman who has a face covered with burn scars, and who is a successful lawyer with a struggling marriage and who has recently become pregnant. As things develop, it becomes clear that the scars Danielle has many more scars than the ones on her face.

Grief is a huge factor in this book. In fact, it is grief in different fashions that drive both Beth and Danielle. How is up the reader to discover. Another equally huge factor in this book is revenge Again, the reader will ascertain how grief and revenge affect Beth and Danielle, and how their lives converge.

This is the third book that I have read by Ruth Heald. She manages to craft intriguing family dramas that bring in very disturbing factors. This is all done at a remarkably fast pace, which always leads to a riveting conclusion.

While reading this book I just knew the women were connected to the past and that their lives had converged at more than one point The fun thing about reading this book is the path that led them to their connection in the present. In true psychological thriller fashion, I Know Your Secret, this book  delivered different viewpoints of unreliable narrators.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC to review. This is my honest opinion.

BLOG TOUR - Red Sky Over Hawaii

Please join me on a Blog Tour for Red Sky Over Hawaii by Sara Ackerman.

DESCRIPTION:

For fans of Chanel Cleeton and Beatriz Williams, RED SKY OVER HAWAII is historical women's fiction set in the islands during WWII. It's the story of a woman who has to put her safety and her heart on the line when she becomes the unexpected guardian of a misfit group and decides to hide with them in a secret home in the forest on Kilauea Volcano.

The attack on Pearl Harbor changes everything for Lana Hitchcock. Arriving home on the Big Island too late to reconcile with her estranged father, all she can do is untangle the clues of his legacy, which lead to a secret property in the forest on Kilauea Volcano. America has been drawn into WWII, and amid rumors of impending invasion, the army places the islands under martial law. When they start taking away neighbors as possible sympathizers, Lana finds herself suddenly guardian to two girls, as well as accomplice to an old family friend who is Japanese, along with his son. In a heartbeat, she makes the decision to go into hiding with them all.

The hideaway house is not what Lana expected, revealing its secrets slowly, and things become even more complicated by the interest of Major Grant Bailey, a soldier from the nearby internment camp. Lana is drawn to him, too, but needs to protect her little group. With a little help from the magic on the volcano, Lana finds she can open her bruised heart to the children--and maybe to Grant.

A lush and evocative novel about doing what is right against the odds, following your heart, and what makes a family.

MY THOUGHTS:

Title:   Red Sky Over Hawaii
Author:  Sara Ackerman
Publisher:  MIRA
Genre:   Historical Fiction
Format:  Kindle ARC
No. of Pages:   400
Date of Publication:   June 9, 2020
My Rating:   5 Stars

This is the first book I have read that is connected to the attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II. I was completely engrossed in this story as it revolves around a woman named Lana Hitchcock. The story develops as Lana is rushing to see her father on the Big Island when he phones and tells her that he is ill. However, she arrived too late and he died after slipping into a coma.

However, her father was someone that made a big impression on the Big Island, and so Lana remains in order to learn more about him. Instead she discovers a secret property in the rain forest of the Kilauea volcano. To her shock, the government had been taking people away that were said to be sympathizers when it came to the war. So, Lana steps in and makes a huge move. She takes in two young German girls whose parents had been detained, a Japanese fisherman named Mochi and his son Benji.

This is no easy task for Lana. In fact, she must lie to protect everyone, keeping their secrets as best she can. There is one other person that Lana becomes involved with at this time and his name is Major Grant Bailey. Lana begins juggling matters when it comes to growing feelings for Grant all while she is trying to keep everyone safe.

What a touching story! The theme of family surfaces over and over again - whether it is due to Lana's previously fractured relationship with her father, the girls she is caring for and how much they miss their parents, and even when it comes to how her relationship with Grant grows.

Although the backdrop of this story involves the attack on Pearl Harbor, it is the characters that are the main focus. We learn much about who Lana is. We also learn a bit about how war separated families and the lasting impact that resulted. We also learned about trust and how not knowing what side to be on during the war affected relationships. This bittersweet story brought on a barrage of emotions, and was pleased to be led to a satisfying conclusion.

Many thanks to MIRA and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Please enjoy the following excerpt:

THE ROAD

December 8, 1941

WITH EVERY MILE CLOSER TO VOLCANO, THE FOG thickened, until they were driving through a forest of white gauze with the occasional branch showing through. Lana considered turning the truck around no less than forty-six times. Going back to Hilo would have been the prudent thing to do, but this was not a time for prudence. Of that she was sure. She slowed the Chevy to a crawl and checked the rearview mirror. The cage with the geese was now invisible, and she could barely make out the dog’s big black spots.

Maybe the fog would be to their advantage.

“I don’t like it here at all,” said Coco, who was smashed up next to Lana, scrawny arms folded in protest. The child had to almost yell to be heard above the chug of the motor.

Lana grabbed a blanket from the floor. “Put this over you. It should help.”

Coco shook her head. “I’m not cold. I want to go home. Can you please take us back?”

Goose bumps had formed up and down her limbs, but she was so stubborn that she had refused to put on a jacket. True, Hilo was insufferably hot, but where they were headed—four thousand feet up the mountain—the air was cold and damp and flimsy.

It had been over ten years since Lana had set foot at Kı¯lauea. Never would she have guessed to be returning under these circumstances.

Marie chimed in. “We can’t go back now, sis. And anyway, there’s no one to go back to at the moment.”

Poor Coco trembled. Lana wished she could hug the girl and tell her everything was going to be okay. But that would be a lie. Things were liable to get a whole lot worse before they got any better.

“Sorry, honey. I wish things were different, but right now you two are my priority. Once we get to the house, we can make a plan,” Lana said.

“But you don’t even know where it is,” Coco whined.

“I have a good idea.”

More like a vague notion.

“What if we don’t find it by dark? Are they going to shoot us?” Coco said.

Marie put her arm around Coco and pulled her in. “Turn off that little overactive imagination of yours. No one is going to shoot us,” she said, but threw a questioning glance Lana’s way.

“We’ll be fine,” Lana said, wishing she believed that.

The girls were not the real problem here. Of greater concern was what they had hidden in the back of the truck. Curfew was six o’clock, but people had been ordered to stay off the roads unless their travel was essential to the war. Lana hadn’t told the girls that. Driving up here was a huge risk, but she had invented a story she hoped and prayed would let them get through if anyone stopped them. The thought of a checkpoint caused her palms to break out in sweat, despite the icy air blowing in through the cracks in the floorboard.

On a good day, the road from Hilo to Volcano would take about an hour and a half. Today was not a good day. Every so often they hit a rut the size of a whiskey barrel that bounced her head straight into the roof. The continuous drizzle of the rain forest had undermined all attempts at smooth roads here. At times the ride was reminiscent of the plane ride from Honolulu. Exactly two days ago, but felt more like a lifetime.

Lana’s main worry was what they would encounter once in the vicinity of the national park entrance. With the Kı¯lauea military camp nearby, there were bound to be soldiers and roadblocks in the area. She had so many questions for her father and felt a mixed ache of sadness and resentment that he was not here to answer them. How were you so sure the Japanese were coming? Why the volcano, of all places? How are we going to survive up here? Why didn’t you call me sooner?

Coco seemed to settle down, leaning her nut-brown ringlets against her sister’s shoulder and closing her eyes. There was something comforting in the roar of the engine and the jostle of the truck. With the whiteout it was hard to tell where they were, but by all estimates they should be arriving soon.

Lana was dreaming of a cup of hot coffee when Coco sat upright and said, “I have to go tinkle.”

“Tinkle?” Lana asked.

Marie said, “She means she has to go to the bathroom.”

They drove until they found a grassy shoulder, and Lana pulled the truck aside, though they could have stopped in the middle of the road. They had met only one other vehicle the whole way, a police car that fortunately had passed by.

The rain had let up, and they all climbed out. It was like walking through a cloud, and the air smelled metallic and faintly lemony from the eucalyptus that lined the road. Lana went to check on Sailor. The dog stood up and whined, yanking on the rope around her neck, straining to be pet. Poor thing was drenched and shaking. Lana had wanted to leave her behind with a neighbor, but Coco had put up such a fuss, throwing herself onto her bed and wailing and punching the pillow, that Lana relented. Caring for the girls would be hard enough, but a hundred-and-twenty-pound dog?

“Just a bathroom stop. Is everyone okay back here?” she asked in a hushed voice. Two low grunts came from under the tarp. “We should be there soon. Remember, be still and don’t make a sound if we stop again.”

As if on cue, one of the hidden passengers started a coughing fit, shaking the whole tarp. She wondered how wise it was to subject him to this long and chilly ride, and if it might be the death of him. But the alternative was worse.

“Deep breaths…you can do it,” Lana said.

Coco showed up and hopped onto the back tire. “I think we should put Sailor inside with us. She looks miserable.”

“Whose lap do you propose she sits on?” Lana said.

Sailor was as tall as a small horse, but half as wide.

“I can sit in the back of the truck and she can come up here, then,” Coco said in all seriousness.

“Not in those clothes you won’t. We don’t need you catching pneumonia on us.”

They started off again, and ten seconds down the road, Sailor started howling at the top of her lungs. Lana felt herself on the verge of unraveling. The last thing they needed was one extra ounce of attention. The whole idea of coming up here was preposterous when she thought about it. At the time it had seemed like a good idea, but now she wondered at her sanity.

“What is wrong with that dog?” Lana said, annoyed.

Coco turned around, and Lana felt her hot breath against her arm. In the smallest of voices, she said, “Sailor is scared.”

Lana felt her heart crack. “Oh, honey, we’re all a bit scared.

It’s perfectly normal under the circumstances. But I promise you this—I will do everything in my power to keep you out of harm’s way.”

“But you hardly know us,” Coco said.

“My father knew you, and you knew him, right?” Lana said. “And remember, if anyone asks, we tell them our story.”

They had rehearsed it many times already, but with kids one could never be sure. Not that Lana had much experience with kids. With none of her own and no nieces or nephews in the islands, she felt the lack palpably, smack in the center of her chest. There had been a time when she saw children in her future, but that dream had come and gone and left her sitting on the curb with a jarful of tears.

Her mind immediately went to Buck. Strange how your future with a person could veer so far off course from how you’d originally pictured it. How the one person you swore you would have and hold could end up wreaking havoc on your heart instead. She blinked the thought away.

As they neared Volcano, the fog remained like a curtain, but the air around them brightened. Lana knew from all her time up here as a young girl that the trees got smaller as the elevation rose, and the terrain changed from towering eucalyptus and fields of yellow-and-white ginger to a more cindery terrain covered with red-blossomed ‘ohi‘a trees, and prehistoriclooking ha¯pu’u ferns and the crawling uluhe. At one time in her life, this had been one of her happiest places. Coco reached for the letter on the dashboard and began reading it for the fourth time. “Coco Hitchcock. It sounds funny.” The paper was already getting worn.

Marie swiped it out of her hands. “You’re going to ruin that. Give it to me.”

Where Coco was whip thin and dark and spirited—a nice way of putting it—Marie was blonde and full-bodied and sweet as coconut taffy. But Lana could tell even Marie’s patience was wearing thin.

“Mrs. Hitchcock said we need to memorize our new names or we’ll be shot.”

Lana said as calmly as she could, “I never said anything of the sort. And, Coco, you have to get used to calling me Aunt Lana for now. Both of you do.”

“And stop talking about getting shot,” Marie added, rolling her eyes.

If they could all just hold it together a little bit longer.

There was sweat pooling between her breasts and behind her kneecaps. Lying was not her strong suit, and she was hoping that, by some strange miracle, they could sail on through without anyone stopping them. She rolled her window down a couple of inches for a burst of fresh air. “We’re just about here. So if we get stopped, let me do the talking. Speak only if someone asks you a direct question, okay?”

Neither girl said anything; they both just nodded. Lana could almost see the fear condensing on the windshield. And pretty soon little Coco started sniffling. Lana would have said something to comfort her, but her mind was void of words. Next the sniffles turned into heaving sobs big enough to break the poor girl in half. Marie rubbed her hand up and down Coco’s back in a warm, smooth circle.

“You can cry when we get there, but no tears now,” she said.

Tears and snot were smeared across Coco’s face in one big shiny layer. “But they might kill Mama and Papa.” Her face was pinched and twisted into such anguish that Lana had to fight back a sob of her own.

MY THOUGHTS:

Title:   Tell Me Lies
Author:  Ed James
Series:  Detective Max Carter #1
Genre:   Mystery/Thrillers
Publisher:  Bookouture
Format:  Kindle ARC
No. of Pages:   384
Date of Publication:   January 21, 2020
My Rating:   4 Stars

In this first book in a new series by Ed James, readers are introduced to FBI agent Max Carter. His past and family issues are touched on, and those things are imperative when it comes to seeing how hard Carter works on his cases.

Max Carter certainly does not have an easy job. As he directs the FBI's Child Abduction Rapid Deployment team, his cases are hard-hitting. Max focused on this work because he himself was abducted as a child.

His current case involves Megan Holliday's two children as they were abducted while she was drugged. It is immediately learned that her husband Christopher is a U.S. Senator. Max cannot help but have suspicious ideas from the very start. Christopher's sudden disappearance definitely raises Max's suspicion.

Tell me Lies is not for the faint of heart. It is full of danger and despair and the action starts and continues at breakneck speed. This story, often quite tragic, is an excellent first book in the new Max Carter series by Ed James. I could not put this book down, despite the devastation I felt while reading. Carter is a thorough FBI agent and I look forward to reading more of his cases in the future.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

BLOG TOUR - Cold Wicked Lies

Today we are celebrating the release of the newest romantic suspense title from New York Times Bestselling Author Toni Anderson by participating in the blog tour! COLD WICKED LIES is a Cold Justice Crossfire novel and it is available now.

However, since Cold Wicked Lies is the third book in the series,

I read the first two books and their reviews are contained as part of this Blog Tour post.

Title:   Cold & Deadly
Series:  Cold Justice: Crossfire #1
Publisher:  Toni Anderson
Genre:   Mystery/Thrillers
Format:  Audiobook
No. of Pages:   400
Date of Publication:   February 12, 2019

DESCRIPTION:

Hostage Negotiators can talk themselves out of anything—except falling in love.

FBI Supervisory Special Agent Dominic Sheridan is an accomplished expert in the Crisis Negotiation Unit. Practiced, professional, used to dealing with high-stake situations under tense conditions, Dominic is a master at manipulating people. Everyone, that is, but the headstrong rookie agent bent on destroying her fledgling career.

As a child, Ava Kanas put her life on the line when the mob executed her father. Now someone has killed her mentor, the man who inspired her to become an FBI agent—and she’s the only one who recognizes it was anything but a tragic accident.

When another agent is murdered and Dominic nearly dies, it becomes obvious a serial killer is targeting the FBI. Together Dominic and Ava search for clues in the investigation, all the while fighting a forbidden attraction that will complicate everything, especially when the predator sets their sights on Ava.

In this exciting crossover series, Toni Anderson introduces new characters alongside some reader favorites.

MY THOUGHTS:

FBI Supervisory Special Agent Dominic Sheridan and rookie agent Ava Kanas are thrown together when agents begin dying and Dominic’s life is at stake. Ava has been assigned as his bodyguard after she almost lost her job. If she can keep him alive she just might hold onto her job.

Dominic is an expert negotiator in the Crisis Negotiation Unit, but falls short when it comes to stopping a maniacal killer. Ava has a lot to prove since she lost her father due a brutal murder and is also dealing with the death of her mentor. The pair don’t get along, except the sparks that fly between them soon spiral out of control.

Cold & Deadly introduces the Cold Justice: Crossfire series. The predecessor series, Cold Justice, is in my TBR, as I only have been able to read the first in the series so far, A Cold, Dark Place. I love how Toni Anderson uses federal agents in her series as they are just the types of shows I enjoy whenever I watch television.

There was a fairly equal mix of passion, intrigue and danger in this book. Both Ava and Dominic are greatly affected by former agent Van Santos’s death. This shared concern is a terrific catalyst in helping the pair work so closely together. At they get closer to the killer, they get even closer to each other. I truly loved Ava and Dominic together making this story an excellent read. I and am eager to read the next book in the series, Colder Than Sin.

DESCRIPTION:

Top FBI negotiator Quentin Savage is hurled into his worst nightmare when a terrorist attack on a luxury hotel propels him from esteemed keynote speaker to powerless captive.

Haley Cramer is co-owner of a private security firm and prides herself on her independence, but she is shaken to the core when gunmen attack a conference she is attending. She survives, but only because Quentin Savage pretends she’s his wife.

Together Savage and Haley plot their escape from a ragtag army of brutal but efficient thugs while struggling to figure out exactly who the enemy is. Why was the conference attacked, and why was Quentin a specific target?

MY THOUGHTS:

Trauma, danger and death chase FBI Negotiator Quentin Savage and Haley Cramer, co-owner of a private security firm, as they are in a fight for their lives. The danger of being on a volcanic island certainly doesn’t make things any easier for them. While the book and their time together starts off hot when it comes to Quentin and Haley, there is also something that is a clear stretch for me as a reader to have to read about. There is sexual assault and an extreme amount of violence in this book.

Beyond that, especially since this is the second book that I have read by Toni Anderson, I know going in that there is going to be a lot of action, sex and violence. Quinton proves to be the ideal hero in this book. He takes his responsibility to protect Haley very seriously and in her words, he lives up to his name Savage, which she will take any day when it comes to the fact that he is doing everything he can to keep her alive.

Both Quentin and Haley were fabulous in this story. Quentin because of his genius, strength and morality. The fact that as a widower, he doesn’t know if he can forget his wife. With Haley, her resilience and kindness shone through. Considering that Haley had been kidnapped and Quentin did everything he could to save her and keep her safe, despite the trauma that she experienced, it is no wonder that they had any chance at all when it came to considering whether they could have a future together.

Meanwhile, while they were on the run, someone else had been kidnapped, and that is a volcanologist named Darby O’Roarke. Her trauma was palpable and not only was she saved by both Quentin and Haley, she too showed remarkable strength.

The action and intensity, including the steamy sex scenes, are nonstop, clearly making this an easy one-sitting read. Although I only have the third book in the series, Cold Wicked Lies, for review, I am glad that I went ahead read this as well as the first book in the series Cold & Deadly. I really love continuity in this series serves it in spades.

DESCRIPTION:

A young woman is found murdered on a remote mountainside, and top FBI Negotiator Charlotte Blood must go head-to-head with her stubborn, sexy, Hostage Rescue Team counterpart to unravel the mystery.

When blame falls on a secretive survivalist group, the stakes turn deadly…and Charlotte discovers that she’s the one tangled in COLD WICKED LIES.

The newest riveting thriller by New York Times bestselling author Toni Anderson.

MY THOUGHTS:

Far less sexy than the first two installments, but equally as tense, Cold Wicked Lies brings two FBI agents from different teams together on a dangerous case. Charlotte Blood is a Supervisory Special Agent and negotiator and Payne Novak is a Hostage Rescue Leader. The pair are facing a very dangerous situation when they are called to a mountainside. The drama begins when Payne comes upon the body of a young woman's body. Gathering clues is imperative. Not only might there be others in danger, but the weather conditions are very bad.

Charlotte's and Novak's exceptional skills might be polar opposite but they both are very dedicated to their jobs. Working along with their current superior certainly is no easy task, but the trio must do what they can to solve a murder that leads to a militia group led by an apparently unstable leader is most definitely a challenge. The drama is extended when it comes to the leader and a secret that is only revealed during a shocking and thrilling conclusion.

All the while, Charlotte and Novak dance around the fact that they are drawn to one another. Danger only appears to make their attraction that much more intense. Will they manage to survive the dangers facing them - and the weather - long enough to explore what is happening?

As I mentioned at the beginning of this review, there wasn't a lot of time for hanky panky as was in the first two books in the series. However, the sexual tension was off the charts. That tension is only increased because they didn't like each other at the outset, so it was nice to see the transition in their feelings.

This was another terrific book in a very promising crossover series. It really makes me want to go back and read the Crossfire series in full, as I only had the opportunity to read the first one, A Cold Dark Place.

Many thanks to Toni Anderson and InkSlinger PR for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
