Chapter 1

“This is a classic case of be careful what you wish for.” Nick placed a stack of folded dress shirts in a suitcase that already held socks, underwear, workout clothes and several pairs of jeans. Only Nick would start packing seven days before his scheduled departure for Europe next Sunday, the day after Freddie and Elin’s wedding. “That’s the lesson learned here.”

“Only anal-retentive freakazoids pack a week before a trip.” Sam sat at the foot of the bed and watched him pack with a growing sense of dread. “Three freaking weeks. The last time you were gone that long, I nearly lost my mind, and I don’t have much of a mind left to lose.”

“Come with me,” he said for the hundredth time since the president asked him to make the diplomatic trip, representing the administration on a visit with some of the country’s closest allies. Since President Nelson was still recovering—in more ways than one—from his son’s criminal activities, several of the allies had requested he send his popular vice president in his stead.

Sam flopped on the bed. “I can’t. I have work and Scotty, and Freddie is going on his honeymoon for two weeks and… I can’t.” No Nick at home to entertain her. No Freddie at work to entertain her. The next few weeks were going to totally suck monkey balls.

“Actually, you can.” Nick hovered above her, propped on arms ripped with muscles, his splendid chest on full display. “You have more vacation time saved up than you can use in a lifetime, and you have the right to actually use it. Scotty will be fine with Shelby, your dad and Celia, your sisters and the Secret Service here to entertain him. We could even ask Mrs. Littlefield to come up for the weekends.”

Their son’s former guardian would love the chance to spend time with him, but Sam didn’t feel right about leaving him for so long. However, the thought of being without Nick for three endless weeks made her sick. His trip to Iran earlier in the year had been pure torture, especially since it kept getting extended.

“Why’d you have to tell Nelson you wanted to be more than a figurehead vice president?” She play-punched his chest. “Everything was fine when he was ignoring you.”

He kissed her lips and then her neck. “You’re so, so cute when you pout.” “Badass cops do not pout.”

“Mine does when she doesn’t get her own way, and it’s truly adorable.” She scowled at him. “Badass cops are not adorable.”

“Mine is.” Leaving a trail of hot kisses on her neck, he said, “Come with me, Samantha. London, Paris, Rome, the Vatican, Amsterdam, Brussels, The Hague. Come see the world with me.”

Sam had never been to Europe and had always wanted to go, so she was sorely tempted to say to hell with her responsibilities.

“Come on.” He rolled her earlobe between his teeth and pressed against her suggestively. “Three whole weeks together away from the madness of DC. You know you want to go. Gonzo could cover for you at work, and things have been slow anyway.”

There hadn’t been a homicide in more than a week, which meant they were due, and that was another reason to stay home. “Don’t say that and put a jinx on us.”

“Come away with me. Scotty will be fine. We’ll FaceTime with him every day and bring him presents. He’ll be well cared for by everyone else who loves him.” He kissed her neck as he unbuttoned her shirt and pushed it aside. “You’d get to meet the Queen of England.”

Sam moaned. She loved the queen—speaking of a badass female. “And the Pope. Plus, you’ll need some clothes—and shoes. Lots of shoes.” “Stop it.” She turned her face to avoid his kiss. “You’re fighting dirty.”

“Because I want my wife to come with me on the trip of a lifetime? I need you Samantha.”

As he well knew, she could deny him nothing when he said he needed her. “Fine, I’ll go! But only if it’s okay with Scotty and if I can swing it at work.” “Yes,” her husband said on a long exhale. “We’ll have so much fun.”

“Will we actually get to see anything?”

He pushed himself up to continue packing. “I’ll make sure of it.”

“Um, excuse me.”

“What’s up?”

“My temperature after your attempts at persuasion.”

A slow, lazy smile spread across his face, making him the sexiest man in this universe—and the next. “Is my baby feeling a little needy?”

She pulled her T-shirt over her head and released the front clasp on her bra. “More than a little.”

“We can’t have that.” Stepping to the foot of the bed, he grasped the legs of her yoga pants and yanked them off.

“Lock the door.”

“Scotty’s asleep.”

“Lock the door, or this isn’t happening.” With Secret Service agents all over their house, Sam couldn’t relax if the door wasn’t locked.

“This is definitely happening, but if it’ll make you happy, I’ll lock the door.”

“It’ll make me happy, which will, in turn, make you happy.” She splayed her legs wide-open to give him a show as he returned from locking the door, and was rewarded with gorgeous hazel eyes that heated with desire when he saw her waiting for him.

“You little vixen,” he muttered.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Sure, you don’t,” he said, laughing as he came down on top of her and set out to give her a preview of what three weeks away together might be like.

They broke the news to Scotty the next morning at breakfast. “So,” Nick said tentatively, “what would you think if Mom came with me to Europe?” Thirteen-year-old Scotty, never at his best first thing in the morning, shrugged. “It’s fine.”

“Really?” Sam said. “You wouldn’t mind? Shelby, Tracy and Angela would be around to hang with you, and Gramps and Celia too. We thought maybe Mrs. Littlefield could come up for a weekend or two if she’s free.”

“Sure, that sounds good.”

Sam glanced at Nick, who seemed equally perplexed by his lack of reaction. They’d expected him to ask to come with them, at the very least.

“Is everything okay?” Sam asked her son.

“Uh-huh.” He finished his cereal and got up to put the bowl in the sink. “I’m going to finish getting ready for school.”

“Okay, bud,” Nick said.

“Something’s up,” Sam said as soon as Scotty left the room.

“I agree. He didn’t even ask if he could miss school to come with us.”

“I thought the same thing.”

“We’ll have to see if we can get him to talk to us before we go—and not in the morning,” Nick said.

“I’ll ask Shelby to make spaghetti for dinner. That always puts him in a good mood.” Sam’s phone rang, and when she saw the number for Dispatch, she groaned. “Damn it. You jinxed me!” So much for getting out of Dodge without having to worry about work. She took the call. “Holland.”

“Lieutenant, there was a fire overnight in Chevy Chase.” The dispatcher referred to the exclusive Northwest neighborhood that was home to a former U.S. president, ambassadors and other wealthy residents. “We have two DOA at the scene,” the dispatcher said, reciting the address. “The fire marshal has requested Homicide detectives.”

“Did he say why?”

“No, ma’am.”

“Okay, I’m on my way.” Thankfully, she’d showered and gotten dressed before she woke Scotty. “Please call Sergeant Gonzales and Detective Cruz and ask them to meet me there.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

Sam flipped her phone closed with a satisfying smack. That smacking sound was one of many reasons she’d never upgrade to a smart phone.

“You’ll still be able to come with me, right?” Nick asked, looking adorably uncertain.

Sam went over to where he sat at the table and kissed him. “I’ll talk to Malone today and see if I can make it happen.”

“Keep me posted.”

A ringing phone woke Christina Billings from a sound sleep. Two-year-old Alex had been up during the night with a fever and cold that was making him miserable and her sleep deprived. Her fiancĂ©, Tommy, had slept through that and apparently couldn’t hear his phone ringing either. He was due at work in an hour and was usually up by now.

“Tommy.” She nudged him, but he didn’t stir. “Tommy. Your phone.” He came to slowly, blinking rapidly.

“The phone, Tommy. Answer it before it wakes Alex.” He needed more sleep and so did she, or this was going to be a very long day.

Tommy grabbed the phone from the bedside table.

Christina saw the word Dispatch on the screen.

“Gonzales.”

She couldn’t hear the dispatcher’s side of the conversation, but she heard Tommy’s grunt of acknowledgment before he ended the call, closing his eyes even as he continued to clutch the phone.

Christina wondered if he was going back to sleep after being called into work. She was about to say something when he got out of bed and headed for the shower.

Nine months ago today, his partner, A. J. Arnold, had been gunned down right in front of Tommy as they approached a suspect. After a long downward spiral following Arnold’s murder, Tommy had seemed to rebound somewhat during the summer. But the rebound hadn’t lasted into the fall.

In the last month, since his new partner, Cameron Green, had joined the squad, Christina had watched him regress into his grief. He’d said and done all the right things when it came to welcoming Cameron, but he was obviously spiraling again, and she had no idea what to do to help him or how to reach him. Even when lying next to her in bed, he seemed so far away from her.

Sometimes, when she had a rare moment alone, she allowed her thoughts to wander to life without Tommy and Alex at the center of it. She loved them both—desperately—but she wasn’t sure how much more she could take of the distant, closed-off version of the man she loved. They were supposed to have been married by now. Like everything else, that plan had been shoved aside to make room for Tommy’s overwhelming grief. It’d been months since they’d discussed getting married. In the meantime, she took care of Alex and everything else while Tommy worked and came home to sleep before starting the cycle all over again.

They didn’t talk about anything other than Alex. They never went anywhere together or as a family. They hadn’t had sex in so long she’d forgotten when it had last happened. She was as unhappy as she’d ever been. Something had to give—and soon, or she would be forced to decide whether their relationship was still healthy for her. She did not want to have to make that decision.

Only the thought of leaving Tommy at his lowest moment, not to mention leaving Alex, had kept her from making a move before now. She loved that little boy with her whole heart and soul. She’d stepped away from her own career as Nick’s chief of staff to stay home with him and had hoped to add to their family by now. When she thought about the early days of her relationship with Tommy, when they’d been so madly in love, she couldn’t have imagined feeling as insignificant to him as a piece of furniture that was always there when he finally decided to come home.

Christina hadn’t told anyone about the trouble brewing between them. In her heart of hearts, she hoped they could still work it out somehow, and the last thing she needed was her friends and family holding a grudge against him forever—and they would if they had any idea just how bad things had gotten. Her parents had questioned the wisdom of her giving up a high-profile job to stay home to care for her boyfriend’s child, especially when she’d made more money than him. But she’d been ready for a break from the political rat race when Alex came along, and she had no regrets about her decision. Or she hadn’t until Tommy checked out of their relationship.

This weekend they’d be expected to celebrate at Freddie and Elin’s wedding, and she’d have to pretend that everything was fine in her relationship when it was anything but. She wasn’t sure how she would pull off another convincing performance for their friends. Tommy was one of Freddie’s groomsmen, so she’d get to spend most of that day on her own while he attended to his friend.

Dangling at the end of her rope in this situation, more than once she’d thought about taking Alex and leaving, even though she had no legal right to take him. Another thing they’d never gotten around to—her adoption of him after his mother was killed. What would Tommy do if she left with his son? Call the police on her? That made her laugh bitterly. She’d be surprised if he noticed they were gone.

Tommy came out of the bathroom and went to the closet where he had clean clothes to choose from thanks to her. Did he ever wonder how that happened? He put on jeans and a black T-shirt and then went to unlock the bedside drawer where he kept his badge, weapon and cuffs.

She watched him slide the weapon into the holster he wore on his hip and jam the cuffs and badge into the back pockets of his jeans, the same way he did every day. Holding her breath, she waited to see if he would say anything to her or come around the bed to kiss her goodbye the way he used to before disaster struck, but like he did so often these days, he simply turned and left the room.

A minute later, she heard the front door close behind him.

For a long time after he left, she lay in bed staring up at the ceiling with tears running down her cheeks. She couldn’t take much more of this.

MY THOUGHTS:

Author:  Lisa Regan
Series:  Detective Josie Quinn #4
Genre:  Mystery/Thriller
Publisher:  Bookouture
Format:  Kindle ARC
No. of pages: 292
Published: November 28, 2018
My Rating:  5 Stars

OMG! Boy, was my heart in my throat reading the first chapter of this book! When I thought who might the victim in this story, I must admit that I was devastated. Why? Because I read Her Mother’s Grave back in July. I don’t quite get it, I have read over 150 books since then, but I remember the characters and developed a fondness for some of them. Thanks Lisa Regan for yanking me into this story by my neck!

When we start this book, detectives Josie Quinn and Noah Farley are finally getting to know one another a little bit better. But they get a phone call and are dispatched to a crime scene immediately. As mentioned, it was rather terrifying to me as a reader to see how Josie and Noah would deal with approaching fellow detective Gretchen‘s home, which is the scene of a homicide. Who is the victim? What’s more, where is Gretchen? She has gone completely off the grid.

At first it is of very serious concern to Josie and her team as to whether not Gretchen was in danger. Unfortunately, as things turned out, Gretchen ends up with a warrant for her arrest. She becomes the main person of interest in the murder that took place on her property. All the while Josie relies on her incredible gut instincts to get to the bottom of the matter. This puts her at odds with Noah and her chief.

This is an incredibly sad and chilling story. The memories that were relayed through the chapters of this book was so intense that at times I had to put the book down for a few moments to stall a lump in my throat and the chills that I had gotten.

Her Final Confession is a shocking and incredible page turner. I have to admit that I cried for Gretchen. My heart was broken, but at all times I was very intrigued as to wondering what was happening while Gretchen was missing, but also caught up in the story as it was relayed. They were chapters devoted to past situations, so it was very interesting to see how it would connect to the cases at hand. There were several storylines here, but what I really enjoyed is how everything came together.

I read the previous book in the series and really enjoyed it. I will say that this book blew that one away. I honestly think it is one of the best books that I read this year. I was thoroughly captivated and could not put this book down. Lisa Regan is in exceptional writer and has developed a compelling story with a conclusion that was absolutely riveting.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC to review in exchange for my honest opinion.

Review - Take a Chance

Title: Take a Chance
Author:  Shelley Shepard Gray
Series:  Bridgeport Social Club #1
Genre:  Romance
Publisher:  Blackstone Publishing
Format:  Kindle ARC
No. of pages: 290
Published: September 18, 2018
My Rating:  3.5 Stars

DESCRIPTION:

Kurt Holland wants the best for his younger brother, which is why he moves Sam to Bridgeport, Ohio. It's a bigger town with a well-known high school. Just the place to give his little brother more opportunities-maybe even a scholarship to college. Kurt hopes his gamble pays off, since Sam's future isn't the only thing riding on it. Kurt's put most of his savings into a new landscaping business there, too. But when Sam gets in trouble for fighting at school, Kurt isn't so sure it was the right decision ... until he meets Sam's English teacher.

Emily Springer is passionate about helping all of her students succeed, but there's something about Sam Holland that makes her want to go the extra mile. When he's caught in a fight at school, she goes to bat in his defense, and during a conference with the principal she meets Sam's rugged older brother-and guardian. Emily has a strict no-dating policy when it comes to her students' parents, but Kurt isn't technically Sam's parent. It's OK to bend the rules a little bit, right?

In an effort to make some friends and find a place in the Bridgeport community, Kurt starts up a weekly poker game in his garage. It's not long before everyone wants in, and they all soon discover that these Friday night poker gatherings are about more than just the game.

Shelley Shepard Gray's new Bridgeport Social Club series is about men who need a place to call home, a community in need of hope, and a group of women who are special enough to help both things happen. This first installment is genuine and heartfelt. It's filled with hope, warmth, and the belief that love and acceptance can overcome any tough situation.

MY THOUGHTS:

Kurt Holland is a man with very good intentions. He moves to the town of Bridgeport after taking guardianship of his seventeen-year-old brother Sam. When Sam gets into a fight in school, Kurt has to go and meet with his teacher. Meeting Emily Springer goes a bit differently than he would have expected. She is quite beautiful and he wonders how he can deal with being attracted to his son’s English teacher.

Emily has always kept to her hard-set rile of never dating a student’s parent, but The all-too handsome Kurt is Sam’s brother, not his father. After running into Kurt at the supermarket, Emily decides to see where things can go between them.

While Kurt and Emily test the waters of seeing one another, Sam and his new girlfriend contend with a very serious issue. This gives Kurt the difficult opportunity to test out his role as pseudo parent. Kurt’s biggest goal is to give Sam the opportunity to become prepared for college. This includes making difficult decisions that ultimately affect his relationship with Emily.

Take a Chance is a warm read with several sensitive characters. Although a romance, I found this book a bit more focused on the angst that Sam and his girlfriend were contending with and the resulting consequences. There are other scenarios at hand, and that includes Kurt’s adjustment to living in a new town and fitting in with the community. There is a strong message of taking chances in this book, thus the title is quite fitting.

I am not familiar with the author, but I would have liked to see the relationship between Kurt and Emily grow a bit more. Instead the story reached a sudden conclusion. Sadly, I turned the page thinking the book was moving on to the next chapter. But. It was just over. I would have liked to see a bit more of a resolution, but as this series continues with the next book in the series, All In, in February. Perhaps the stories will have a better sense of finality.

Many thanks to Blackstone Publishing and to NetGalley for this ARC to review in exchange for an honest opinion.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

I grew up in Houston, Texas, went to Colorado for college, and after living in Arizona, Dallas, and Denver, we moved to southern Ohio about ten years ago.

I’ve always thought of myself as a very hard worker, but not ‘great’ at anything. I’ve obtained a bachelor’s and master’s degree…but I never was a gifted student. I took years of ballet and dance, but I never was anywhere near the star of any recital. I love to cook, but I’m certainly not close to being gourmet…and finally I love to write books, but I’ve certainly read far better authors.

Maybe you are a little bit like me. I’ve been married for almost twenty years and have raised two kids. I try to exercise but really should put on my tennis shoes a whole lot more. I’m not a great housekeeper, I hate to drive in the snow, and I don’t think I’ve ever won a Monopoly game. However, I am the best wife and mother I know how to be.

Isn’t it wonderful to know that in God’s eyes that is okay? That from His point of view, we are all exceptional? I treasure that knowledge and am always so thankful for my faith. His faith in me makes me stand a little straighter, smile a little bit more, and be so very grateful for every gift He’s given me.

I started writing about the Amish because their way of life appealed to me. I wanted to write stories about regular. likeable people in extraordinary situations-and who just happened to be Amish.

Getting the opportunity to write Inspirational novels is truly gratifying. With every book, I feel my faith grows stronger. And that makes me feel very special indeed.

BLOG TOUR - The Diary

Today is my stop on the Blog Tour for The Diary by Vikki Patis.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

‘I know all your secrets, Lauren.’

Lauren has spent years running away from her home town, her childhood and the memories of her best friend, Hannah.

Until the tenth anniversary of Hannah’s death forces her to return home and to the group of friends she abandoned there. It should be a quick visit, just so Lauren can pay her respects.

At home, Lauren finds Hannah’s old diary. A diary full of secrets. The terrible things Lauren did, the lies she’s told, the reason she ran away. And she receives a message:

‘I don’t know why you’re back, but I know why you left.’

But no-one else has seen the diary, and Hannah’s dead, isn’t she?

A suspenseful psychological thriller full of twists and turns – you won’t be able to stop turning the pages of The Diary. Perfect for fans of The Sister, The Girl on the Train and We Were Liars.

MY THOUGHTS:

Title: The Diary
Author:  Vikki Patis
Genre:  Psychological Thriller
Publisher:  Bookouture
Format:  Kindle ARC
No. of pages: 299
Published: November 26, 2018
My Rating:  4 Stars

Lauren does the one thing she never, ever wanted to do. She responds to her father’s plea to visit him. Lauren had left her home in Hitchin years ago after her best friend Hannah committed suicide. When Lauren left, her friend’s loss was only one of the bad memories that she was escaping.

It is the tenth anniversary of Hannah’s death and Lauren is reluctantly reunited with her friends from school. Not only are they all hiding secrets, they begin receding terrifying and threatening text messages. Shockingly, Lauren unearths a diary that Hannah had hidden. This diary, coupled with the messages, are certain to topple over the careful world Lauren has built. She really thought her carefully constructed life could erase the tragic memories of her past.

The Diary is delivered from Lauren’s first person point of view and is told in both the present and the past. Her story reveals how she and Hannah got to know on another and in so doing details much about the angst-ridden young life that she and Hannah experienced. The tragic reasons and result of this teen suicide is sadly recounted. While Lauren’s past is replayed, the circumstances involving her high school friends and their lives then and now are presented and is more than often quite tragic.

I found The Diary to be a compelling read. Not only is the story very tragic, it is rather thrilling with a definite edge of danger to Lauren and her former friends. It was very sad to see that Lauren’s memories of Hannah were even more dismal than she ever had imagined. It was also rather shocking to see the secrets and lies this group of young people shared while growing up, all while presently trying to bury such an awful past.

It was indeed quite a mystery to imagine whoever could have been sending the horrible text messages and I was on the edge of my seat truly wondering if Lauren or any of the other characters that made up part of the group of people would experience even more tragedy.

To discover that the author, Vikki Patis, is a debut writer was a true delight. She has a very persuasive manner of writing that kept me riveted to this story. It was well-paced, well-written. It is of interest to note that the author explains at the end of the book that she herself dealt with some similar experiences while she was growing up. Of course, this adds a touching sense of realism for her own life’s experiences to be fictionalized as she has done here. Vikki Patis is definitely an author to watch.

Review: The Amish Midwife’s Secret

Title:  The Amish Midwife’s Secret
Author:  Rachel J. Good
Series:  Love and Promises #2
Genre:  Inspirational Romance
Publisher:  Forever
Format:  Print ARC
No. of pages: 384
Date of Publication: November 27, 2018
My Rating: 5 Stars

DESCRIPTION:

An Amish midwife and an Englisch doctor must embrace their differences to rescue a baby in need in this uplifting romance that will "capture your heart and leave you smiling" (Amy Lillard).

Kyle Miller never planned on becoming a country doctor. But when he's offered a medical practice in his sleepy hometown, Kyle knows he must return... and face the painful past he left behind. Except the Amish community isn't quite ready for Kyle. Especially the pretty midwife who refuses to compromise her traditions with his modern medicine...

The more Leah Stoltzfus works with the handsome Englisch doctor, the more she finds herself caught between the expectations of her family and her own hopes for the future. It will take one surprising revelation and one helpless baby in need of love to show Leah and Kyle that their bond may be greater than their differences... if Leah can find the courage to follow her heart.

MY THOUGHTS:

Having just read The Amish Teacher's Gift, there was no doubt in my mind that this would be an incredible story. I definitely was not disappointed.

Dr. Kyle Miller gets an unusual phone call from his Amish hometown in Pennsylvania. The town’s doctor is offering Kyle his home and entire medical practice as the aging doctor wants to retire. As incredible as this offer is, Kyle has several sincere reasons to decline it. Reluctantly, Kyle agrees to take time out of his demanding schedule to spend a few days working with the other doctor.

There are many problems Kyle is faced with while making this difficult decision. For one thing, he had a tragic past there and can truly never, ever imagine making that place his home again. However, the doctor is pressing him, and Kyle has a lot of trouble simply saying no, although he cannot bring himself to saying yes.

Leah Stoltzfus is an Amish midwife in training. She is more than overwhelmed at the moment. In addition, she is running her family’s store, studying and courting a man named Ben. Leah finds herself in the company of Kyle while dealing with patients during his visit. She is truly perplexed. In part, she has a secret that she is keeping from Kyle. Worse than that, she is quite drawn to him. She is thoroughly confused. He is Englisch, for one thing, and this is against her Amish ways, there is something that she is dreading telling him, and there is the fact that she is courting Ben.

As stated, I read the first book in this series just previously. I am now familiar with the incredible talent that inspirational romance writer Rachel J. Good has. Her stories are multi-layered, sensitive and sweet. Her books are very well researched and her writing style is impeccable. This is a very engaging story and had a wonderful conclusion. Not only do I definitely want to continue with this series, I now want to go back and begin the Sisters and Friends series as well.

Although this book can do well as a standalone, it is the second in a series and is connected to other stories.

Many thanks to Forever for this ARC to review in exchange for my honest opinion.

DESCRIPTION:

During a rare white Christmas at Brambledean Court, the widow Elizabeth, Lady Overfield, defies convention by falling in love with a younger man in the latest novel in the Westcott series.

After her husband's passing, Elizabeth Overfield decides that she must enter into another suitable marriage. That, however, is the last thing on her mind when she meets Colin Handrich, Lord Hodges, at the Westcott Christmas house party. She simply enjoys his company as they listen to carolers on Christmas Eve, walk home from church together on Christmas morning, and engage in a spirited snowball fight in the afternoon. Both are surprised when their sled topples them into a snowbank and they end up sharing an unexpected kiss. They know there is no question of any relationship between them, for she is nine years older than he.

They return to London the following Season, both committed to finding other, more suitable matches. Still they agree to share one waltz at each ball they attend. This innocuous agreement proves to be one that will topple their worlds, as each dance steadily ensnares them in a romance that forces the two to question what they are willing to sacrifice for love. . . .

MY THOUGHTS:

First a kiss. Then a dance. Then a promise for a waltz at every ball during the coming Season. How did it all start? It is Christmas at Brambledean Court and Alexander Westcott, Earl of Riverdale, has invited quite a few family members to enjoy the festivities immediately after the wedding of Viola and Marcel. If you have read the previous stories in the Westcott Series you will be familiar with other newly marrieds, Anna and Avery, Camille and Joel, Alexander and Wren, as well as a host of other relatives. During the first several chapters, the author explains how everyone is connected.

Colin Handrich, Lord Hodges, is twenty-six years old, and is Wren’s brother, who is now married to Alexander. Colin has quite a fondness for Elizabeth Overfield, Alexander’s sister. Elizabeth is nine years Colin’s senior. If not for her age, Colin can easily see himself falling in love with her. She is the most beautiful woman he has ever met. He sees her down to her very soul.

Elizabeth wants to be happy. After all, she just witnessed the wonderful wedding of Viola and Marcel. And, it is the holidays, yet Elizabeth is rather melancholy and bit depressed. Elizabeth thought she had at one time found the love of her life. However, it was a marriage that was mostly miserable and her husband eventually died due to his drinking.

Elizabeth is truly happy for the bride and groom and hopes from the depths of her heart that they find true contentment and joy forever. However, she is sadly filled with envy and loneliness. While observing the four recently married couples over the past two years and noticing their incredible happiness, Elizabeth wonders if she herself should remarry. After all, she has had offers. If she married for the sake of companionship, would she be able to stave off her loneliness?

Colin also wonders about marriage. He has a title and wealth, and he knows that he must soon search for a bride. During their time with the family at the holidays, Colin feels quite drawn to Elizabeth. He jokes to her that perhaps they should marry. She looks at him in shock. They suit in temperament, likes and attraction. There is an obvious problem, however, their age difference. The ton would never stand for it.

As the Season approaches, Colin and Elizabeth have much to look forward to. At the very least, it is the promise to dance the first waltz at each ball. Meanwhile Elizabeth has been contemplating a previously made offer for marriage. Colin begins to observe the young women present and wonders which of them might make a bride for him, someone that he can love. He will accept nothing less.

This fifth book in the series is rich with wonderful, happy characters that make a large blended family. We are re-introduced to a character from a previous book who is not so wonderful but does have a role that affects the decisions that Colin and Elizabeth eventually must make.

Someone to Trust is a truly wonderful love story. Mary Balogh tells this tale quite beautifully and it is very easy to fall in love with the main characters. It is delivered in a great fashion and makes a perfect companion to the previous titles. I definitely look forward to future books in this series.

Many thanks to Berkley Books and First to Read for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

I grew up in post-war Wales as Mary Jenkins. It was in many ways an idyllic childhood even though Swansea, my home town, had been heavily bombed during the war, rationing was still on, and material possessions were few. If anyone knew how to stretch a penny to do the work of two, it was my mother.

My sister, Moira, two years older than I, was my constant playmate and soul-mate. We both have a hard time convincing people who did not know us then that we were almost inseparable yet never quarrelled. Our few dolls became our family. They had names, personalities, histories. We used to lie awake in bed at night–until our mother would call up, promising dire consequences if we did not stop talking–inventing stories about our dolls’ antics. On summer days Mam would construct a tent out of blankets, string and clothes pegs attached to the clothesline and the garden fence, and we would play “house” all day. The neighbours must have cringed when we took our dolls for walks in the strollers Dad made for us, complete with solid–and excruciatingly noisy–wooden wheels.

Moira and I both used to fill notebooks with stories. We read voraciously–especially every book of Enid Blyton’s we could get our hands on when we were younger, the classics when we were a little older. We both used to say that we wanted to be authors when we grew up, though the word we used then was authoress. We both fulfilled our dream, though we both financed it with careers as high school English teachers.
