MY THOUGHTS:

Serenity. Community. Help. Answers. Well. A mommune, a communal environment for women and children.

Lenna and Rhiannon become fast friends, and Rhiannon even plays a part in Lenna getting a job at the gossip magazine. However, there is another young woman on the fringes of Lenna and Rhiannon's friendship, and this plays into the drama that Lenna experiences before long.

In this story of past and present, Lenna is now a mother to a baby named Jacob. Seemingly in love with her husband Daniel, Lenna is surprised when she hears from Rhiannon after their friendship was lost many years ago. Lenna takes Rhiannon up on the offer to leave Danial, albeit temporarily, and to go to a community called Halcyon. 

Lenna takes Jacob and heads to the desert to this unusual community. Daniel is perplexed as to why Lenna has left. It is at this point the story begins to shift and plays into secrets, mysteries and more. In fact, there is even a measure of gaslighting in this story. The question as to whether or not Lenna can get used to the communal way of thinking, even though her stay was meant to be for only a short while.

Nowhere Like Home gave me strong vibes of the Eagles song, Hotel California, especially the lines, "You can check-out any time you like. But you can never leave!" When you read this chilling book by Sara Shepard, you might be just as inclined as I was to stop and listen to the once-popular song.

My did I love this book! The drama shifting from past to present, all while wondering about the integrity of the community made this book quite an engaging read. If there was any drawback, it would be the drama/trauma that more than one character experienced and how this shaped most of the story. Sara Shepard has escaped my radar before now, but I will likely check out her next book.

MY THOUGHTS:

Haven's Rock doesn't quite live up to its name as there are hidden dangers. One of those dangers for residents that live in the hidden town is what could happen to them in the forest. When Max, only one of two children in a quite unusual community is being taught survival skills, and this includes tracking skills. Max says he saw a bear, and then says that he saw human eyes.

Detective Casey Duncan and her husband Sheriff Eric Dalton try to deal with the danger that a bear could present to their town. The pair met in Rockton, which was a community much like they have now, but they were only residents. Now, they are actually founders of Haven's Rock and they want everyone to be safe.

Even before the possible bear sighting is confirmed, Max goes missing. He is only a ten-year-old boy and would be ill-equipped to survive in the woods on his own. Did Max wander off and get lost, or could something more nefarious have happened to the boy?

The Rockton/Casey Duncan series, which comprises of seven books, would be an excellent start for one wanting to read The Boy Who Cried Bear. Then, the first book in this Haven's Rock series, Murder at Haven's Rock, all contain excellent background of all of the characters and their way of life. Yes, this book could be read as a standalone if need be, but for full appreciation of what Casey and Dalton experience and how they work hard to protect their town, reading both series in order would be highly recommended.

This book, and all of the books in these two series, were excellent reads that kept me tapping my Kindle consistently until I reached the satisfying conclusion. I cannot wait to see what lies in store for Casey, Dalton and the rest of Haven's Rock residents.

MY THOUGHTS:

 

Gabriel and Iris are doing well in their life and marriage. They have a daughter currently working in Greece. However, there is something greatly bothering Gabriel. Arriving home from the trip, they discover that their good friend Laure is staying in their home. As they are good friends with Laure and her husband Pierre, the couple each has keys to one another's homes. 

Laure tells Iris that she will be there for an indefinite period of time, and that she has found out something about her husband that makes her unsure if she wants to stay married to Pierre. Laure soon becomes the guest who never leaves.

Meanwhile, Iris wants Gabriel to get back to his jovial self. She knows what is bothering him, but not to the full extent. As Iris and Gabriel are navigating their lives, Laure's life is topsy turvy and what happens to her affects Iris and Gabriel.

While I have enjoyed many of B. A. Paris's books, this one didn't Wow me. I was interested in the drama, but that is what it was, drama. Iris and Gabriel's relationship. Lore and Pierre's fractured relationship. Other relationships. Nonetheless, Paris is a must-read for me and I look forward to her next book.

Bookstore owner Flora Steele already has a full schedule with an upcoming event. It is a Crime Writers' Conference and Flora hopes to sell books during the event. However, she takes time away as she plans on delivering a gift to retiring librarian Maud Frobisher. As Flora approaches the library where Maud works, things do not look right. In fact, it does not take Flora long to realize what happened. Jack, Flora's fiancé Jack, a crime writer, will also be at the conference.

Not only does Flora see a man standing rather close to Maud's body, she sees that he is holding something that clearly has blood on it. Putting two and two together, Flora is certain that she has run into the murderer. 

Flora and Jack live in the small village of Abbeymead and they are no strangers to nefarious activities. It is always fun to see Flora diving in headfirst while Jack tries to show more restraint, even when danger plays a huge role.

It is hard to believe that The Library Murders is the eighth book in the delightful Flora Steele cozy mystery series. Having read and enjoyed all of the previous books in the series, I am glad to say that the stories are fresh, the characters are well-written and there is always a fair amount of intrigue. Meanwhile, Flora and Jack's wedding is coming up, albeit delayed by the conference. Many fans like me are eager for book nine so that we can see if the wedding will soon take place.

MY THOUGHTS:

Fatal First Edition is the 14th book in the Library Lovers Mystery series. The book is about a murder on a train that is connected to the Patricia Highsmith's book Strangers on a Train. From the outset it might seem that Lindsey Norris and her husband Sully are in for a pleasant train ride home after a library conference. Curiously, as the conference was drawing to a close, Lindsey found a tote bag under her chair. The bag contained a rare first edition of the Highsmith Classic. Without hesitation, Lyndsay hands the book over.

Lindsey and Sully are tucked in for the night in their sleeper car. While both are sleeping soundly, Lindsey hears some thumping sounds from the compartment next door. She rushes out of their compartment, rousing Sully and others. She thinks she sees someone in a black coat, but otherwise everything seems fine.

The next morning the dining car is full almost to the point of overflowing, but the conference director Henry is the only person not present. Although a couple of people find this strange, breakfast continues. When Lindsey discovers that the conference director was assigned to the compartment next to hers and Sully's she raises an alarm. Before long, Henry's dead body is discovered and it is more than apparent that a murder has taken place.

While the chief of police detains the train's passenger when the train arrives in their small town of Briar Creek, Lindsey and Sully plan on getting back to their lives. The chief, Emma, is more than adequate for the job of identifying the killer. However, things go awry and with nail-biting tension, danger follows close on the heels of Lindsey and Sully.

Not only is the take on this book on the Hitchcock classic movie, but the age-old question is raised - "which is better, the movie or the book"? While I am one who usually thinks the book is better, little did I know that the movie Diehard is said to be better than the book. My personal comparison would be Jurassic Park, as I think the movie was far more entertaining than the book. However, I digress. I loved this book and have enjoyed every single book in the series thus far. I am very much looking forward to continuing with this series.

MY THOUGHTS:

Dove Barkley had planned to meet her sister for dinner. The two have a good relationship - some of the time. Two years younger, and orphaned when they were children, Dove's sister Madison still treats Dove like a child, rather often. However, Madison is out of the country most of the time, and home for a brief period of time, Dove is looking forward to having dinner with Madison.

Arriving early to the restaurant, Dove is soon greeted by someone who certainly is not Madison. From there on in, her life will never be the same.

Dove loved her life, a Penetration Tester, or a legal hacker who helped companies find their weak points, she is content to work behind the screen and to be at home at night - alone. Madison thinks Dove should start dating again, after Dove's last relationship fell apart.

Meanwhile, Dove is being interviewed, and the guy who is interviewing her catches her attention. A bit of flirting here and there, and she gives the guy her number. However, that restaurant meeting ...

It was truly a case of mistaken identity. Dove and Madison could pass for twins, with a few subtle differences. The guy interviewing Dove? In fact, his name is Mendez and he is actually part of the CIA. Dove gets drawn into real espionage, all because Madison is not the person Dove thought she was.

This fast-paced romantic comedy was enjoyable. I loved Dove's snarky nature, her absolutely brilliant mind and  her growing relationship with Mendez. Then the twists this story had when it came to who Madison really was and why Dove got drawn into this serious case of espionage kept me tapping my Kindle in pretty much one sitting.

MY THOUGHTS:

I may not play the lottery, but The Wife's Mistake would be an excellent reminder of what not to do when one wins millions with the perfect ticket. £12 million might have seemed like such a grand amount that all of Natalie's and Hayden's problems - as well as to give the both of the life they always dreamed of.

Instead, problem after problem face the couple. From family members who want as piece of the pie, to poor decisions, to secrets being exposed, things for Natalie and Hayden go from bad to worse. To dream of wanting more is not a bad thing, but when it suddenly fell into the laps of Natalie and Hayden rushing in to a new lifestyle just might have led to devastating effects.

As this ALC was expertly narrated by Imogen Church, I found myself both completely drawn into the story, but also cringing as it felt like a roller coaster ride that would end in disaster. The couple could have had it all if decisions were more balanced. But then, are most people balanced when you go from living paycheck to paycheck to becoming millionaires overnight?

Many say that money is the root of all evil, but the Bible states that the love of money is the root of all evil. If you want a wild ride when love of money, greed and deception rule the day, look no further than The Wife's Mistake.

I started out as a politics graduate and worked for the British Home Office for a number of years, before turning to crime fiction. My first thriller, FRY was released in 2013.

I was named after the novel, Lorna Doone, and as you would expect, I love reading. My favourite genre is crime, especially psychological thrillers but I also enjoy romance and historical fiction.

The books I write are dark domestic thrillers. I like to see what happens when ordinary people are thrown into impossible situations and I'm especially fond of female villains.

                                                  HOW WAS MY WEEK?                                                  

Well, I started off this week working on a huge diamond painting for a couple of hours while I listened to the rest of Girl, Forgotten by Karin Slaughter. This was my second reread by Slaughter as I wanted to be fresh with the stories when I wrote the book reviews. I then headed out to an appointment and am now enjoying some music while I pen a few more book reviews. Once I am done with the reviews I will begin a new jigsaw puzzle. It is called Next by Charlies Wysocki from Buffalo Games. I will be listening to The Library Murders by Merryn Allingham while I begin the puzzle. It was such a beautiful day today so I enjoyed waiting outside for my transportation. However, all of that is due to change with a heavy snow predicted beginning tomorrow, at the rate of two inches per hour.

As it turned out I did not work on the puzzle I had pulled out.  Instead I spent hours diamond painting and began a puzzle from a company called eeBoo. The balance of my time was spent writing book reviews. As my week drew to a close I managed to read 14 books and watched a few network television shows.. The weather is mild again and I have a feeling Massachusetts just might be done with snow for this winter. Here's to a great reading week ahead!
