DESCRIPTION:

The multimillion-copy and New York Times bestseller B. A. Paris returns with a triumphant, unsettling new suspense novel.

Who is watching Nell Masters?

Nell Masters is certain someone is following her. The hairs on the back of her neck rise when she travels to and from work, there are silent calls to her office, and a huge bouquet of flowers arrives without a card. And Nell has a reason to be looking over her shoulder, because she has a secret that she’s hiding from everyone in her life, including her new partner, Alex. But Alex also has secrets of his own.

Fourteen years earlier, when Nell went by the name Elle Nugent, she witnessed a student, Bryony Sanders, getting into a stranger’s car. When Bryony was found murdered, Elle became obsessed with finding the person responsible. She was convinced she knew who it was and her fixation with Brett Parker, the man she accused, led her down a dangerous path . . .

Now, Nell tries to convince herself that this unnerving feeling of being watched is all in her mind. Has someone from her past discovered her new identity? Has the stalker become the stalked? Or is there something even more deadly at play?

MY THOUGHTS:

Nell Masters is convinced she’s being followed. She’s certain it’s no coincidence; she’s haunted by events from years ago. In her past life, she was Elle Nugent. One day, she witnessed a fellow student getting into a strange car. Tragically, the young woman was found dead, and Nell was certain of the culprit. This obsession led to tragic consequences, prompting her to change her name.

Is someone executing a plan of revenge for Nell? She is not simply paranoid. There are very specific things that are happening in her life presently that point to proof that she is unsafe, and this leads to difficulties as to knowing who to trust in her circle.

The story shifts in perspective as it’s peppered with journal entries that end with the ominous words, “when I kill you.” To complicate matters, Nell is tentatively happy with her new partner, Alex, but she knows that she is not the only one hiding secrets. There’s a shadow of secrets surrounding him, adding to Nell’s sense of unease.

Georgia Maguire’s narration of this audiobook is exceptional. The stalker’s notes, ending with the chilling phrase, “when I kill you,” are utterly terrifying. However, I found the characterization lacking. As someone who values communication, it became tiresome that Nell couldn’t trust anyone, especially as the story repeatedly emphasized this flaw.

Many thanks to Macmillan Audio and to NetGalley for this free ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW - Murder Will Out

Title:   Murder Will Out

Genre:  Mystery & Thrillers
Format:  Audio ALC

DESCRIPTION:

Minotaur Books/Mystery Writers of America First Crime Novel Award winner Jennifer K. Breedlove brings coastal Maine to life in Murder Will Out, a lighter, modern gothic mystery that's as atmospheric as it is heart-warming.

Come for the memories. Stay for the murder...

Little North Island, off the coast of Maine, is so beautiful it could be a postcard. Organist Willow Stone cherishes her memories of childhood summers spent on the island with her godmother Sue... even though her visits ended abruptly, and she hasn't seen or heard from her godmother in over fifteen years. Until a letter from Sue—and word of Sue’s death—brings Willow back to the picturesque island.

The islanders rarely mention Sue without also bringing up Cameron House, and the controversy around Sue’s unexpected inheritance of the sprawling mansion. When Willow overhears someone threatening the next heir to the property, she starts to question whether Sue’s death was really an accident, and can’t help but wonder whether someone on this sleepy island is willing to stop at nothing—even murder—to claim Cameron House for their own.

Through Willow’s eyes, as well as those of others on the island, a mystery unfolds that keeps drawing Willow back to Cameron House and the very real ghosts that walk its corridors.

MY THOUGHTS:

Learning the meaning of the title of this book came when I stumbled upon this sentence in the story: “Murder will out—no secret can remain hidden forever, and the guilty will come to justice.” As mentioned, this is a memorable line from Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. I had to look it up and discovered that it signifies the abominable nature of murder and its inevitable exposure. This is certainly the case in this gothic mystery by Breedlove.

The setting is perfect, set off the coast of Maine. Maine holds fond memories for me as a child, so it was delightful to have a book set in that location. In the story, Willow Stone cherishes memories of spending time with her grandmother in Maine, though she never understood why those visits abruptly ended.

It is now 15 years later Willow learns that Sue has passed away. Quite naturally, Willow head to Maine. She may not have appreciated it as a child, but a mansion there on the little island that was once her haven has a dark history. It is also laden with secrets that just might play into the fact that perhaps Sue’s death was not an accident as she had been told. Willow wants answers, and she connects with a few of the town’s members in her quest.

The premise of this debut story was intriguing, and the atmosphere was captivating. I particularly enjoyed the incorporation of the Chaucer quote in Murder Will Out. However, both the book and its characters fell short of my expectations. Although the audiobook narration was well done, I struggled to connect with Willow. Additionally, the gothic elements of the story felt somewhat forced. As a fan of gothic mysteries, I’ve been able to avoid those with a paranormal twist, but this book managed to surprise me. For readers who enjoy paranormal stories with a light gothic twist, this might be a perfect fit.

Review - The Resistance Knitting Club

Title:  The Resistance Knitting Club
Author:  Jenny O’Brien
Series:   Threads of Resistance #1
Publisher:  Storm Publishing
Genre:   Historical Fiction
Format:  Kindle ARC
No. of Pages:   359
Date of Publication:   February 6, 2026
My Rating:   5 Stars

DESCRIPTION:

Inspired by the true story of a woman who used knitting patterns to encode intelligence during World War Two.

Guernsey, 2010. After a stroke, an elderly woman shocks her family by speaking perfect French – a language they never knew she possessed. As her granddaughter unravels seventy years of silence, a hidden wartime story emerges...

Paris, 1941. After her brother is declared missing in action at Dunkirk, eighteen-year-old Lenny Gallienne vanishes into Churchill’s secret army. In a bookshop on Rue de la Pompe, she poses as a simple shop girl while encoding intelligence from Nazi headquarters into knitting patterns. Each sweater smuggled to prisoners contains flight paths. Each scarf holds radio frequencies. Each mistake means execution.

Fellow agent, Harry Dennison, is the only person who knows her real name. But when the Gestapo close in, Lenny faces an impossible choice in the Metro tunnels beneath Paris – one that will haunt her family for generations. Because in the resistance, the most dangerous secrets are the ones you keep from those you love most.

Perfect for fans of The Nightingale, The Alice Network and The Last Bookshop in London.

MY THOUGHTS:

Set in Paris in 1941, The Resistance Knitting Club introduces us to Lenny Gallienne, a young woman whose decision to join the Resistance is born out of heartbreak. When her brother is declared missing in action during one of the darkest chapters of the war, Lenny is driven by grief - and determination to do whatever she can to help save lives.

By day, she poses as a shop girl in a bookshop. In secret, however, she uses her extraordinary knitting skills to serve the Resistance, cleverly encoding messages within her patterns and stitches. It’s a unique and fascinating twist on wartime espionage. Though her youth often leads others to underestimate her, Lenny proves that courage and ingenuity are not defined by age. With the Gestapo drawing ever closer, her quiet bravery becomes all the more striking.

There is also a tender romantic thread woven throughout the story. Harry Dennison, a fellow agent and close friend of Lenny’s brother, becomes both an ally and a source of comfort. Their relationship develops naturally amid the danger surrounding them, adding warmth to an otherwise tense and uncertain time. Still, this is wartime France, and nothing, including love, comes without risk.

Heartfelt and poignant, this novel highlights the resilience of ordinary people called to do extraordinary things, even when the cost may be devastating.

Review - Love and Other Brain Experiments

DESCRIPTION:

Perfect for fans of Ali Hazelwood and Christina Lauren, a STEM academic-rivals-to-lovers rom-com set at a New York conference about two neuroscientists who are forced to pretend they’re dating, leading to unexpected chemistry and a heartfelt journey of self-discovery.

Neuroscientist Dr. Frances Silberstein has success on the brain. As a grad student, she was offered a job by her brilliant boyfriend, but determined to make it on her own, she turned it—and him—down. Now, stuck in postdoc purgatory with no job security and no personal life to speak of, Frances is desperate to make a breakthrough. Her best shot is a summer conference packed with her field’s leading scientists. The only problem? It’s organized by her ex, who has found the success that’s eluded her. But backing out is not an option, because Frances desperately needs to network to save her career.

Enter Dr. Lewis North: her perceptive, meticulous, and inconveniently attractive rival. When their academic sniping gets mistaken for flirtatious chemistry, Frances doesn’t deny it—putting her integrity and career on the line. As soon as her prefrontal cortex is operational again, Frances realizes she needs to keep up the charade, or risk everything she’s worked for. Faking data is out of the question, but fake dating? That might just be the solution she needs.

But as Lewis starts to make her reward centers spark and a major setback has Frances questioning everything, she must confront what she’s willing to chase—for love, for science, and for the future she thought she wanted.

MY THOUGHTS:

Dr. Frances Silverstein is undeniably brilliant. A gifted neuroscientist, she is chasing a career-defining grant that could finally provide the stability she’s long been seeking. Yet while her professional ambitions are clear, her personal life feels far less certain, and this leaves her quite unsettled.

Complicating matters is her growing attraction to fellow neuroscientist Dr. Lewis North, a man she considers her nemesis. Lewis once gave a sharply unfavorable review to Frances’s work, leaving her doubting not only her research but her own instincts. Now, as they find themselves competing for the very same grant, tensions rise. In an effort to strengthen her chances, Frances agrees to a fake dating arrangement with Lewis during the approval process. This quickly blurs the lines between rivalry and romance.

One of the more compelling elements of the story is the dynamic between Frances and her sister. That relationship adds emotional texture and a welcome layer of complexity. Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite enough to keep me fully invested. With the familiar pairing of enemies-to-lovers and fake dating tropes, the story follows a well-worn path, and Frances herself struggles to truly come into her own.

I was immediately drawn to this novel because I’m always eager to read about a STEM heroine. I love seeing women portrayed as exceptionally intelligent while navigating the challenge of balancing ambition and personal fulfillment. Sadly, this one fell short for me. At times, the central relationship felt more forced than organic, and the professional rivalry bordered on exaggerated. Between her ongoing conflict with Lewis and the growing friction with her sister, I found it difficult to connect with Frances as a character. The romantic spice also didn’t quite work for me.

That said, Love and Other Brain Experiments is Hannah Brohm’s debut novel, and there is clear potential in her storytelling. While this particular story didn’t fully resonate with me, I would be open to reading her work again in the future.

MY THOUGHTS:

Bella Winters is not a woman who believes in coincidences. She soon finds herself entangled in a web of intrigue when she has a chance to possibly purchase an exquisite marble statue. The day after the possible sale, there is the mysterious death of a woman named Maggie who had offered to sell it to her.

While the statue would have seamlessly fit into Bella’s charming antique shop, which was her primary focus, she is drawn to another, more pressing matter. Bella soon learns that Maggie had a sister, Bethany, who died in the exact same manner. Two sisters. Two eerily similar deaths. And a statue that now feels less like a prize and more like a clue.

Bella can’t help but to question the circumstances surrounding the untimely deaths of the sisters. Were they accidents? Slipping naturally into the role of amateur detective, Bella sets aside her shopkeeping duties long enough to dig deeper. Her curiosity isn’t idle—it’s insistent. The more she uncovers, the more convinced she becomes that these deaths demand answers. Bella’s determination to separate coincidence from conspiracy drives the story forward at a brisk, engaging pace.

This is the fourth book in a delightful series, and the setting continues to be one of its greatest charms. Bella’s antique shop adds warmth and texture to the mystery, grounding the suspense in a cozy, inviting atmosphere. With its blend of intrigue and charm, this series continues to deliver exactly what I’ve come to love about it.

MY THOUGHTS:

Emma is Benjamin’s second wife, and she has always known that marrying a widower means living in the shadow of another woman. What she doesn’t expect is for that shadow to start writing back.

When Emma begins receiving letters signed, “the wife he killed,” her world tilts on its axis. She had believed without question that Benjamin’s first wife died in a tragic accident. Benjamin is a respected surgeon, polished, admired, and seemingly beyond reproach. The idea that he could be capable of something darker feels impossible… and yet the letters keep coming. Each one chips away at Emma’s sense of safety, leaving her frightened, isolated, and unsure of whom to trust.

Emma’s position makes everything more complicated. She works for Benjamin’s father, which tightens the family web around her. Even within the walls of her own home, she must navigate the presence of Benjamin’s teenage daughter - a constant reminder of the woman who came before her. The emotional tension is thick, and Emma’s growing paranoia feels both justified and deeply unsettling.

What I appreciated most is how Willow Rose slowly tightens the screws. The dread builds in layers. Is Emma being manipulated? Is someone playing a cruel game? Or has she married a man whose carefully curated reputation hides something sinister? Just when you think you have a handle on where the story is heading, another doubt creeps in.

Willow Rose delivers another twisty psychological thriller that keeps you second-guessing until the very end. As the final twist begins to take shape, the tension becomes almost unbearable—in the best way. This is a story about trust, perception, and how quickly certainty can unravel.
