BLOG TOUR - The Highlander's English Bride

Today I am pleased to be a part of the Blog Tour for The Highlander's English Bride by Vanessa Kelly..

ABOUT THE BOOK:

In this dazzling new novel from bestselling author Vanessa Kelly, the wildest member of Clan Kendrick has found his purpose as a government agent. Now he must also meet his match...

Lady Sabrina Bell has never been so embarrassed in her life. Not only did her new suitor fail to appear for their morning rendezvous in Hyde Park, but a thief pushed her into the Serpentine. Being rescued by a burly Highlander just adds to her humiliation. Nor is he content with rescuing her just once. Even when Sabrina travels to Edinburgh as part of King George’s entourage, Graeme Kendrick is there, interfering, exasperating, and so very tempting...

Once notorious for being the most unruly Kendrick brother, Graeme now runs dangerous missions for the King’s spymaster. Yet nothing has prepared him for Sabrina. The only child of a wealthy earl, and the pampered goddaughter of the king himself, she is stubborn, impetuous, and far too good for him. He doesn’t deserve her, but he can protect her and then send her safely back home. But the bonny Sassenach has her own ideas—and a plan for seduction that no red-blooded Highlander could resist...

MY THOUGHTS:

Title:   The Highlander's English Bride
Author:  Vanessa Kelly
Series:  Clan Kendrick #3
Genre:   Historical Romance/Scottish
Publisher:  Zebra Books
Format:  ebook & Paperback
Pages:  May 26, 2020
Date of Publication:
My Rating:  4 Stars

I have been enjoying this series by Vanessa Kelly. This third book in the Clan Kendrick series treats readers to Graeme Kendrick’s story. Busy running dangerous missions for the King’s spymaster hardly leaves time for romance. While out on a mission he spied Lady Sabrina Bell pushed into the Serpentine River by a thief. Of course, Graeme rushes in and rescues her. While they both recognize how attractive the other is, they hardly think they will see one another again.

Graeme discovers that the damsel in distress he rescued was meeting her suitor, the Marquess of Cringlewood, who readers might remember from the second book in this series, The Highlander’s Christmas Bride. This is very upsetting to Graeme as the man is evil, a nightmare, a rapist and an enemy of Graeme’s family.

Graeme feels a dire need to protect Sabrina from Cringlewood. Not only is he an uncouth man by all standards, Graeme knows the blighter is after Sabrina’s wealth. Even with Graeme’s mission to bring men like Cringlewood to justice, as well as dealing with a group of kidnappers, he immediately plans on putting Sabrina under his protection. However, Graeme is hardly prepared for her stubborn and impetuous nature.

Sabrina has traveled to Scotland and she happens to be the goddaughter of King George. This ratchets up Graeme’s concern all the more. He wants to see her safely home. How will Graeme have time to serve the King’s orders and carry out his current mission with his altruistic attentions towards Sabrina?

Not only does Graeme balance his spying with Sabrina’s safety, he must contend with growing feelings for her. Sabrina simpered from time to time, but her headstrong nature gave her strength. Along the way we see Graeme deal with kidnappers, thieves and even the smuggling of whiskey. This gives the pair even more interchanges.

I loved this pair together! Graeme was brutal when he needed to be - but kind and tender to Sabrina. Her spirit was refreshing and once Sabrina decided she wanted Graeme for her own, there was no stopping her. This couple was indeed perfect for each other. With intense sensual tension and ultimately passion, this book truly was a delightful read.

Many thanks to Zebra, HFV Blog Tours and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

THE HIGHLANDER’S ENGLISH BRIDE

CLAN KENDRICK

Graeme Kendrick, spy for the British Crown, is tracking a notorious gang of jewel thieves. Lady Sabrina Bell has also fallen afoul of the thieves. Attending a theatrical gala with friends, Sabrina is robbed at gunpoint.

The thief gave Sabrina a mighty shove, pitching her straight into Graeme. Her foot tangled around his ankle, and they went down to the floor. He landed hard on his back, with Sabrina on his chest. Her hip connected forcefully with his groin.

Pain sucked the air from his lungs. His brain shrieked at him to get up and go after the thief, who was pelting down the stairs. His body, however, refused to comply.

Sabrina pushed up, her hipbone pressing harder into his beleaguered cock.

“Argh. Stop moving,” he yelped.

“That villain stole my pearls.” She started to scramble up, as if prepared to chase after the thief.

Graeme shot out a hand to grab her. “He’s got a gun, you henwit.”

She glared at him through her coiffure, now listing over one eye. Impatiently, she shoved the bedraggled knot to the side.

“I remember. It was pressed into my spine.”

He sat up, fighting the pain. “Och, lass. You’re worth more than any jewels.”

Her outraged expression suddenly crumpled. “But those were my mother’s pearls. Father gave them to her,” she said in a forlorn voice.

“I’m sorry—”

Aden strode round the bend in the corridor. “Graeme, what the hell is Lady Sabrina doing on the floor?”

“We were accosted by a thief,” she said. “He just absconded with my pearls.”

“He went down the stairs,” Graeme said.

Aden cursed. “Get Sabrina back to the box, and stay with her.” Then he disappeared down the stairs.

Sabrina, now on her feet, peered down at Graeme. “Are you hurt?”

“Do you recall when your hip connected with my body, perchance?”

She grimaced. “I suppose I did fall rather hard. I’m so sorry.”

He breathed out, willing the pain to fade. “Not your fault. Just give me a few more seconds, all right?”

“Perhaps we should we send for a doctor?”

“Lass, there’s nothing a sawbones can do about this particular problem.”

She blinked, then turned a bright pink. “I’m exceptionally sorry.”

“Not to worry.”

As he carefully hoisted himself up, Chloe and Vivien came rushing up the staircase.

“Aden said you needed help,” Vivien said. “What’s wrong?”

“I was robbed,” Sabrina dolefully replied. “A terrible man took my mother’s pearls.”

Chloe folded her into a comforting hug. “That’s awful. Are you all right?”

“I’m unharmed.”

Vivien leveled a stern look at Graeme. “And you just let this person run off with Sabrina’s jewels?”

He glared right back. “He had a bloody pistol on her, Vivien.”

“There was really nothing Mr. Kendrick could do,” Sabrina explained. “The villain came right up behind me out of the blue, with his awful pistol.”

“And I was a good ten feet away, unfortunately.” He grimaced but finally managed to straighten up.

“Graeme, are you injured?” Chloe asked.

“Mr. Kendrick hurt himself when he fell on the floor,” Sabrina explained.

Vivien frowned. “That sounds quite unhelpful of you, Graeme.”

“I didn’t just happen to fall. Lady Sabrina tripped me.”

“Not on purpose,” she protested.

“You should not have been wandering about unescorted.” Now that she was safe, his frustration—and the remnants of his gut-wrenching fear for her—had resurfaced.

“He has a point, dearest,” Vivien said. “Theaters can be a trifle dodgy.”

“I wasn’t wandering. I was following Mr. Kendrick.”

Chloe, who was trying to repair Sabrina’s hair, raised her eyebrows. “Also not very appropriate. Dear girl, please stand still while I fix your coiffure.”

“Why were you following me?” Graeme couldn’t help asking.

She wrinkled her nose. “Because I wanted to apologize for the other night, when I was rather beastly to you.”

“Oh. Well, no harm done, lass.” Then he mentally grimaced at his idiotic response.

Vivien looked ready to laugh, but a swell of voices had her glancing toward the stairwell. “The interval is over.”

Chloe started to usher Sabrina toward their box. “Coming, Graeme?”

Sabrina glanced over her shoulder. “Aden did say you were to stay with me, Mr. Kendrick.”

“For all the damn good it will do,” he muttered. The thief was probably long gone by now.

He stalked behind them down the corridor to their box.

Sabrina hesitated before going in. “I don’t know what I’m going to say to my father.”

“Don’t say anything. Maybe he won’t notice,” Graeme said.

She shot him an incredulous look.

“I’ll explain,” Chloe said. “We don’t want to worry poor Lord Musgrave any more than we have to.”

Dominic suddenly opened the door from the inside. His gaze flickered over their little group, snagging momentarily on Sabrina’s bare throat. He let out an exasperated sigh.

“Really?” he said to Graeme.

“It’s rather complicated, dear,” Chloe said.

“It always is when a Kendrick is involved.”

BLOG TOUR - A Royal Kiss & Tell

Today is my stop on the Blog Tour for A Royal Kiss & Tell by Julia London.

DESCRIPTION:

Every prince has his secrets. And she’s determined to unravel his…

Every young man in London’s ton is vying for Lady Caroline Hawke’s hand—except one. Handsome roué Prince Leopold of Alucia can’t quite remember Caroline’s name, and the insult is not to be tolerated. So Caroline does what any clever, resourceful lady of means would do to make sure Leo never again forgets: sees that scandalous morsels about his reputation are printed in a ladies’ gossip gazette…all while secretly setting her cap for the rakish royal.

Someone has been painting Leo as a blackguard, but who? Socially, it is ruining him. More important, it jeopardizes his investigation into a contemptible scheme that reaches the highest levels of British government. Leo needs Lady Caroline’s help to regain access to society. But this charming prince is about to discover that enlisting the deceptively sweet and sexy Lady Caroline might just cost him his heart, his soul and both their reputations…

Lady Caroline Hawke certainly has her pick when it comes choosing someone to court. However, only one man gives her pause and that is Prince Leopold of Alucia. As far as Leopold is concerned, he is set by duty to marry another. What is more is that he has no idea who Caroline is. And that vexes her. Annoys her. So, Caroline makes sure that Leopold remembers her. Having a lady's gazette at her disposal allows Caroline the chance to get Leopold's attention - and not in a favorable way. Instead she uses the gazette to besmirch his reputation.

Leopold wants to know who is behind the awful rumors being printed about him. But, things go far deeper than how he looks by what has been printed. There is actually a rather awful scheme that reaches high up in the London government that needs to be exposed, so Leopold approaches Lady Caroline in order to gain her help in doing so. The fact that the pair are strongly attracted to each other soon presents difficulties on more than one level.

A Royal Kiss & Tell goes beyond the trope of what might be considered hate to love. Instead, it gets deep rather quickly by exposing a slave trade occurring among those in the higher echelons. For this book to deal with this issue was a nice twist to what I as a reader have come to expect in historical romances.

Caroline's independent nature and Leopold's righteous one clashed more than once, especially considering Caroline's original goal. Meanwhile, Leopold may have wanted to do right - and did his darnedest along the way - was offset by his frustration due to the fact that he was the "spare" in the Alucian monarchy. He had everything but often wanted more and this did not always make him a pleasant person.

I loved development of the romance between Leopold and Caroline and also her relationship with her brother Beck and friends Eliza and Hollis. These relationships gave a nice bit of balance to the otherwise sensitive subjects and the mystery that was being exposed. I enjoyed this book as well as the first in the series, The Princess Plan and definitely look forward to reading Hollis's story in A Princess by Christmas, due for release in October.

Many thanks to HQN Books and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Please enjoy the following excerpt:

Since the day of Eliza’s betrothal to Prince Sebastian, Caroline had also assumed, quite incorrectly, that she would be the principal bridesmaid. After all, she and Eliza and Hollis had been entwined in one another’s lives since they were very little girls.

“I am content with flower girls, honestly,” Eliza said. “I’d be content with a very simple affair. I was content with the civil ceremony. But Queen Daria prefers otherwise.”

“Naturally, she does. This is the wedding where you will be seen by all the people you will rule one day.”

Eliza snorted. “I will not rule, Caroline. I’ll be fortunate if I can find my husband in this massive place.” She’d gestured to the decorative walls around them. It was not an exaggeration—Constantine Palace appeared to be bigger than even Buckingham.

“Let me be the maid of honor,” Caroline had begged her. “I am much better equipped to see to your train than Hollis is.”

“I beg your pardon! I am her sister,” Hollis reminded Caroline.

“The train is thirty feet, Hollis. How will you ever manage? You’ve scarcely managed your own train since we’ve been in Alucia. And my gown should be seen. I spared no expense for it.”

Eliza and Hollis looked at Caroline.

“I mean, of course, after your gown is seen.”

The sisters continued to stare at her. Caroline shrugged a very tiny bit. “Obviously,” she added.

“I rather thought that’s what you meant,” Eliza said charitably. The three of them had gleefully adopted the Alucian style of dress since arriving a month ago in Helenamar. The English style of dress—full skirts, high necks and long sleeves—was hot and heavy. They’d admired the beautiful Alucian gowns that fit the curves of a woman’s body, with the long flowing sleeves, and, most of all, the elaborately embroidered trains…until they discovered that the unusually long trains were a bit of a bother to wear.

“I will manage,” Hollis had insisted. “No one has come to this wedding to see your gown, Caro.” “Well, obviously, Hollis, they haven’t. But they will be delighted all the same, won’t they? And by the bye, there’s no law that says the attendant of honor must be one’s sister.”

“There is no law, but she is my sister and she will be the attendant of honor,” Eliza said. “And besides, if you were to stand with me, I’d fret the entire ceremony that you were too enthralled with Leo to even notice my train.” She’d arched a golden brow directly at Caroline.

As if Caroline had done something wrong.

She most certainly had not. “Leo? Is that what we’re calling him now?” she drawled. Leo was Prince Sebastian’s younger brother. His Royal Highness Prince Leopold.

Prince Leopold, as everyone knew, had spent the last several years in England, “attending” Cambridge, which meant, in reality, that he spent more time at soirees and gentlemen’s clubs and hunting lodges than studying. Caroline had encountered him last summer in Chichester at a country house party. They’d engaged in a charming little exchange that Caroline recalled perfectly, word for word. Prince Leopold, on the other hand, remembered it not at all. Worse, he didn’t seem to remember her.

The archbishop’s voice suddenly rose into a chant of some sort, drawing Caroline’s attention back to the ceremony. Oh dear, she was thinking about Prince Leopold again when she should be watching her best friend marry a prince. At that moment, Eliza slipped her hand into Prince Sebastian’s hand and held on tightly as the archbishop asked her to repeat after him in English. To love, to honor, to protect and defend.

So romantic.

Caroline glanced to her right. She was seated next to her brother, the baron Beckett Hawke. He was older than her by half a dozen years and had been her guardian since she was eight and he was fourteen. She leaned against him.

“Isn’t she lovely?” she whispered.

“Ssh.”

“I think she is lovelier than even Queen Victoria on her wedding day,” Caroline whispered. “Her gown is beautiful. It was my idea to use the gold and silver thread on the train.”

Beck pretended not to have heard a word.

“Do you know, I think I could have made that train.” Her brother put his hand on Caroline’s knee and squeezed as he turned his pale green eyes to hers. He frowned darkly.

Caroline pushed his hand away and glanced around her. It was massive, this Saint Paul’s Cathedral. Painted ceilings soared overhead with visions of angels and other godly images. All the fixtures were gold plated, particularly the pulpit, which looked more like a monument than a stand for the Bible. There was so much stained glass that the morning light fractured across Eliza’s long train, turning it into a moving rainbow as sunlight shimmered through the panes.

Every seat in the massive cathedral was taken, filled with beautiful people of varying skin tones and colorful costumes and glittering jewels. They had come far and wide, Caroline understood, from countries she’d never even heard of.

In a cove above the altar, a choir of young men and boys sang the hymns that had accompanied Eliza down the center aisle to meet her prince. It had sounded as if the heavens had parted and the angels were singing for this bride.

The ceremony, almost an hour of it now, was filled with a lot of pomp and circumstance. Caroline wasn’t entirely certain what was happening, as the ceremony was conducted in Latin and Alucian and, for the parts Eliza had to say, in English. It seemed to her that Eliza and Sebastian were up and down quite a lot, one minute on their knees with their heads bowed, and standing the next, staring starry-eyed at each other. There was a somber moment when Eliza was directed down onto her knees alone. It looked as if she were knighted or anointed in some way, and when it was done, the archbishop put his hand to her head, the king and queen stood, and then Prince Sebastian lifted her up and pinned a gorgeous sapphire-and-gold brooch to her breast.

“She’s a real princess now,” Caroline whispered to Beck. Predictably, he ignored her.

Eliza looked like a princess, too, and Caroline wished Eliza’s father, Justice Tricklebank, could be here. Alas, his advanced age and blindness had made it impossible for him to attend. There had been a smaller, private ceremony in England—the first civil union—before Sebastian had returned to Alucia. That ceremony, which her father had attended, had been necessitated by the fact that Eliza and Sebastian could not seem to keep their hands from each other for as much as a few hours.

There was another civil union once Eliza had arrived in Alucia so there would be no question of impropriety, as the heat between Eliza and her prince had only grown. It was embarrassing, really.

But neither ceremony had been anything like this. This was a pageant, a feast for the eyes and hearts of romantics everywhere.

Caroline’s mind drifted, and she wondered if all these people would be at the ball tonight. She hoped so. She had a beautiful blue Alucian gown trimmed in gold that was astoundingly beautiful. She’d made the train herself. The ball would be her moment to shine…next to Eliza, of course.

Yesterday, Eliza had nervously counted out the heads of state that would attend the wedding and the ball and had turned a bit pale as the number mounted. Caroline’s pulse had leapt with delight.

“I can’t bear it!” Eliza had exclaimed, unnerved by the number of dignitaries, of the many kings and queens. “What if I say something wrong? You know how I am. Have you any idea how many gifts we’ve received? Am I to remember them all? I’ve never seen so many gold chalices and silver platters and fine porcelain in all my life! What if I trip? What if I spill something on my gown?”

“My advice, darling, is not to fill your plate to overflowing,” Hollis had said absently. She was bent over her paper, making notes for the periodical she published, the Honeycutt’s Gazette of Fashion and Domesticity for Ladies. The twice-monthly gazette covered such topics as the latest fashions, domesticity and health advice, and—the most interesting part—the most tantalizing on-dits swirling about London’s high society.

Hollis could hardly keep up with the ravenous demand for society news now. She was planning to publish a gazette that would be twice the length of her normal offering with all the news of the royal wedding the moment she returned to London. She’d been busily dispatching letters to her manservant, Donovan, for safekeeping throughout the month they’d been in Alucia.

She was so preoccupied that her advice, while offered freely, was not offered with much thought, and Eliza took exception. “I beg your pardon! I’ve hardly eaten a thing since I’ve arrived in Alucia. At every meal the queen looks at me as if she disapproves of everything I do! I’m afraid to do anything, much less eat,” Eliza complained. “They’ll all be looking at me. They’ll be waiting for me to do something wrong, or speculating if I’m already carrying the heir. You cannot imagine how much interest there is in my ability to bear an heir.”

“Well, of course!” Caroline said cheerfully. “You’ll have to be a broodmare, darling, but after you’ve given them what they want, you may live in conjugal bliss for the rest of your days surrounded by wealth and privilege and many, many servants.”

“They won’t all be looking at you, Eliza. At least half the room will be looking at your handsome husband,” Hollis had said with a wink.

Caroline was once again jolted back into the present when the archbishop lifted a heavy jeweled chalice above the heads of Eliza and Prince Sebastian. Surely that meant they were nearly done? Prince Sebastian took Eliza’s hand, and they turned away from the archbishop, facing the guests with ridiculously happy grins on their faces. They were married!

Hollis turned, too, and even from where Caroline sat, she could see Hollis’s dark blue eyes shining with tears of joy. The guests rose to their feet as the prince and his bride began their procession away from the altar. Rose petals rained down on the couple and their guests from above. The little flower girls fluttered around behind Eliza like butterflies, flanking her train as they followed the couple down the aisle. Prince Leopold offered his arm to Hollis, and she beamed up at him. Caroline felt left out. Hollis and Eliza were near and dear to her heart, the closest thing to sisters she’d ever had, and she longed to be with them now.

Eliza and Prince Sebastian floated past Caroline and Beck without any acknowledgment of them. That was to be expected—the two of them looked absolutely besotted. They were so enthralled with each other, in fact, that Caroline fretted they’d walk into any one of the marble columns that lined their path.

Oh, but she was envious, filled to the very brim with envy. In England, she rarely gave marriage any thought except on those occasions Beck complained she ought to settle on someone, anyone, and relieve him of his duty. But he didn’t really mind his duty, his protestations notwithstanding. Caroline rather suspected he liked having her underfoot. So she flitted from one party to the next, happy to enjoy the attentions of the many gentlemen who crossed her path, happy with her freedom to do as she pleased.

But looking at Eliza, Caroline realized that she did indeed want one day to be in love with a man who would be as devoted to her as Prince Sebastian was to his bride. She wanted to feel everything Eliza was feeling, to understand just how that sort of love changed a person.

Prince Leopold and Hollis passed by Caroline and Beck. Hollis’s face was streaked with happy tears. Prince Leopold happened to look to the guests as they passed, a polite smile on his face. His gaze locked on Caroline’s—well, not locked, really, as much as it skimmed over her—but nevertheless, she smiled broadly. She began to lift a hand but was suddenly jostled with an elbow to her ribs. She jerked a wide-eyed gaze to her brother.

“Stop gawking,” he whispered. “You’ll snap your neck, craning it like that.”

Caroline haughtily touched a curl at her neck.

Beck turned his attention to the procession. The king and queen were passing them now. Beck leaned toward her and whispered, “He’s a prince, Caro, and you are just an English girl. You’re indulging in fairy tales again. I can see it plainly on your face.”

Just an English girl? She very much would have liked to kick Beck like she used to do when she was just a wee English girl. “Better to dream in fairy tales than not dream at all.”

Beck rolled his eyes. He stood dispassionately as the archbishop and his altar boys followed the king and queen.

Just an English girl, indeed.

BLOG TOUR - The House on Firefly Beach

Today is my stop on the Blog Tour for The House on Firefly Beach by Jenny Hale.

Nothing beats falling in love under the sun, with the sand beneath your feet. This gorgeous, feel-good, and heartwarming summer escape from the bestselling author of The Summer House is perfect for fans of Mary Alice Monroe, Susan Mallery and Nancy Thayer.

For Sydney Flynn, her treasured family home, Starlight Cottage, is her sanctuary. The house on the beach, surrounded by glittering turquoise waters, is the perfect place for her fresh start, piecing her life back together after it fell apart. That’s until her knees almost buckle at the sight of Nate Henderson.

As teenagers, Sydney and Nate spent their summers whispering sweet nothings and promising “forever” to each other. Sydney never imagined that her childhood sweetheart was going to break her heart, driving away from her and Firefly Beach, never looking back.

Now, when Sydney spots him at her sister’s wedding, their eyes meeting across the rows of guests, she barely recognizes him. The down-to-earth son of a fisherman, forever in beach t-shirts and flip flops, is replaced with a successful songwriter in a designer suit, a superstar in the country music scene. Yet despite everything, his dazzling blue eyes and easy smile stir up all the feelings she thought she’d left behind.

Nate is back to make it up to Sydney, but can she forgive him for all the heartbreak he caused? And it’s not only about her – Sydney is a single mother to Robby, her whole world, and she won’t let just anyone into their lives. Can she trust that Nate has really changed?

As if worrying about Nate wasn’t enough, a new development threatens Starlight Cottage, the safe haven that saved her when she had nothing else. Can Nate and Sydney overcome their past to save Firefly Beach and the house that holds so many memories for them? Or will the town they adore, and the love they have for one another, be lost forever?

Sydney Flynn had love once. Maybe he wasn't her soul mate, but she was happy enough and was blessed to have a son. Now it is time for her to get her life back on track. She is even more blessed to have a place she can call a sanctuary, Starlight Cottage, willed to by her Aunt Clara, so it is back to Firefly Beach with eight-year-old son Robby.

In the first book in this series, Summer on Firefly Beach, Sydney's sister Hallie was blessed by their dear aunt, and along the way found her true love, Ben. It is at Hallie and Ben's wedding when she makes incredibly intense eye contact with Nate Henderson, the man that was undeniably the true love of her life.

Sydney and Nate were in love when they were teens, but they ended up taking different paths in life - Nate to Nashville where he became a highly successful music producer. Sydney followed her passion and became a professional journalist. The pair had a wonderful relationship for several years. Now that the couple are around one another again, is there a chance to start over?

For one thing, Sydney has Robby to think of. She must consider him, not just her heart, and if she would admit it, she is sure she could fall for Nate all over again. However, there are conflicts that the couple must contend with, so the road to love and happiness might be challenging.

I so love the little village of Firefly Beach with its lovely residents. It is nice to pick up a book like this where the characters warm your heart. There is more than a bit of angst with the book and this rounds the story up nicely. I loved Robby and really felt for him as he dealt with his father's loss, and the bonus of Nate developing a relationship with him was something very touching. Then there is Uncle Hank, and his sadness after losing his beloved Clara. Sydney's love and dedication to Uncle Hank was palpable.

This lovely story was compelling from page one and carried straight through to a wonderful conclusion. So, for the perfect summer read, I would say go and grab this book - and its prequel - at the first opportunity. I really hope there are more books in this series.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC to review in exchange for my honest opinion.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

When I graduated college, one of my friends said, "Look out for this one; she's going to be an author one day." Despite being an avid reader and a natural storyteller, it wasn't until that very moment that the idea of writing novels occurred to me.

Sometimes our friends can see the things that we can't.

While I didn't start straight away, that comment sowed a seed and several years, two children, and hundreds of thousands of words later, I completed a novel that I felt was worthy of publication. The result was Coming Home for Christmas, a heart-warming story about the magic of love at Christmas, and 2017 TV movie on The Hallmark Channel.

The rest is history.

When I'm not writing, I'm a mother of two boys and a wife to a very supportive husband.

BLOG TOUR - Sunshine and Second Chances

I am very pleased to be a part of the Blog Tour for Sunshine and Second Chances by Kim Nash.

DESCRIPTION:
It’s never too late to be offered a second chance at life.

Debs is newly single, Fiona is caring for her mum, Samantha is grieving, and Liv has the perfect life – or so she’d like her friends to think…

This year, these four life-long friends are turning fifty, and Liv is determined they will honour their promise to each other – made on a beach at sunrise twenty-nine years before – to celebrate this milestone together.

And what better place than a gorgeous villa where they will be spoiled and enjoy the stunning beaches, picturesque fishing towns and glorious climate of the Algarve?

But time away from home doesn’t always make the heart grow fonder. Sometimes it makes the thought of returning to your life too hard to bear. Especially with more than one gorgeous Portuguese man making hearts unexpectedly flutter...

It begins as a reunion in the sunshine, but little do the four friends know what life-changing decisions they’ll all be making before their flight home.

A heart-warming, feel-good summer read about friendship, love and second chances.

They did it on their 21st birthdays and they are doing it again as their 50th birthdays approach. Four friends, Debs, Olivia, Fiona and Samantha, separated by distance and time, are following through on a promise made when they turned 21. They are getting together again for a few days. The destination is a beautiful villa in Portugal. The five days that the women spend together will change them forever. If indeed life offers second chances, these four lives will get a reset.

Are they content in their lives, or will they learn things about themselves - and each other - that will afford them the chance to grab at more? A bit about them. Fiona is dedicated to her mum, who is suffering from Alzheimers. Their interchanges were heartbreaking, but it is more than clear of the love and dedication Fiona has. Then there is Debs, divorced and insecure, certain that any chance at happiness is forever gone, especially  since her ex-husband Dave left her for another woman. What about Samantha, who is still grieving after a terrible loss? Lastly, Olivia, married mum of two and still looking fabulous? She seems to have it all, but is she happy?

While their hosts, particularly Mikey and Eduardo, do their best to give the women a beautiful time, rich with fine wine and the most delectable meals, emotions give way to all of them, some with far-reaching and wonderful results.

This was such an enjoyable story by Kim Nash. I felt a connection to each woman in one way or another. I loved the emotional edge that threaded through the pages of this book. I also loved the snippets of humor along they way. As things wrapped up for a marvelous conclusion, I was left with a smile on my face. I think readers are going to love Sunshine and Second Chances as much as I did as it will make for an outstanding summer read.

Many thanks to Kim Nash for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

BLOG TOUR - No Escape

Today is my stop on the Blog Tour for No Escape by Casey Kelleher.

DESCRIPTION:

The one place she never wanted to go back to. The one place she can’t escape.

When she was just five years old, Lucy Murphy witnessed her mother’s brutal murder in their home on London’s notorious Griffin Estate. The case was never solved. Now a newly qualified police officer, Lucy has been given her first job: she’s going back to the Griffin Estate.

She is there to protect the estate’s vulnerable residents, including Shannon and Kian Winters, two kids struggling to deal with their alcoholic mother. Fifteen-year-old Shannon is working every spare hour to keep a roof over their heads, but thirteen-year-old Kian has fallen under the sway of gang leader Jax Priestly. And now Jax has plans for Shannon too…

As Lucy gets to know Kian and Shannon she becomes determined not to let the two teenagers become Jax’s victims. But time is running out. Jax is out of control, and the gang’s violent reprisals are escalating. Can Lucy face down her own demons in time to prevent a tragedy? As a child, she already witnessed the murder of one innocent person. It will take all her courage and training to stop another.

A shocking, fast-paced read that will keep you gripped from beginning to end. Fans of Kimberley Chambers and Martina Cole won’t be able to put this down.

Lucy Murphy is now a police officer. Considering her incredibly traumatic past of witnessing her mother's brutal murder when she was just five years old, this was an amazing accomplishment for her. That crime was never solved, and try as she might, she just could never remember enough details of the killer's face to have the man brought to justice.

After her mother's murder, Lucy was taken away from her home at Griffen Estate by her grandmother. Now she is brought right back to the estate. Lucy gets involved with two teens, Shannon and Kian Winters. The teens are coping with their alcoholic mother and her enabling boyfriend. Although only fifteen years old, Shannon is shouldering most of the responsibility in keeping her family afloat. Meanwhile, 13-year-old Kian has fallen in with a bad crowd, and is now under the thumb of gang leader Jax Priestly.

It takes Lucy no time to realize how dangerous Jax is and she will do anything she can to protect the teens. Meanwhile, Jax and the violence of his gang is rising, leaving Lucy with hardly any time to help the kids. The trauma she experienced is with her all of the time, and she will do everything she can to keep them from experiencing anything close to that.

While Lucy is doing her best to help Shannon and Kian, she is also dealing with her beloved grandmother who is suffering from dementia. She loves her grandmother dearly, and is struggling to take care of her despite the heartbreaking challenges. No Escape is a character-driven story where most of the characters easily touched my heart. Conversely, there are some unlikable people in this story, thus striking a fine balance.

This was a very well-written gangland thriller that kept me hoping for the best for Shannon and Kian, but especially for Lucy as I hoped she could gain closure from her mother's murder. The scenes were gritty and are often tinged with sadness. From the twists and turns to the riveting conclusion, this was a book I could not put down.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
