BLOG TOUR - Before He Vanished

DESCRIPTION:

His disappearance changed her life forever.

Twenty-five years ago, Halle Lane’s best friend vanished from their Tennessee town. When a childhood photo brings Liam Hart to Winchester, Halle is certain the man is the same child who vanished. Now Liam seeks out Halle to help him investigate the circumstances of his mysterious past. Can Liam and Halle uncover the truth before a killer buries all traces of the boy Halle loved—and the man he may have become—forever?

MY THOUGHTS:

Title:   Before He Vanished
Author:  Debra Webb
Series:  Winchester, Tennessee #6
Publisher:  Harlequin Intrigue
Genre:   Romantic Suspense
Format:  Kindle ARC
No. of Pages:   256
Date of Publication:   February 18, 2020
My Rating:   5 Stars

Halle Lane has managed to have a decent life. However, she never got over the loss of her best friend when she was a child. It is now twenty-five years later and Halle wants to figure out what happened once and for all. Meanwhile, Liam Hart, a very successful man with a profitable vineyard gets a photo that all but shatters him.

When Liam goes to Winchester, Tennessee to ask questions about why he would receive a photo that eerily reminds him of himself, imagine Halle's reaction when she sees Liam. She is more than positive that this stranger in town, Liam, is not a stranger at all - he is Andy Clark, the missing boy.

Despite Liam's strong beliefs that this must be some type of mistake, he and Halle start working together to uncover the real truth. For starters, what were the circumstances behind Andy going missing? Why did Liam receive the photograph? Halle loved Andy Clark. Is it possible Liam is actually Andy Clark? If so, where does their future lie?

Before He Vanished delivered an excellent mystery. This book had some twists and turns that truly kept me guessing. As I have read a few of Debra Webb's books, I was sure that this one would be a good read. I definitely was not disappointed. This book is the sixth in the Winchester, Tennessee series. I only read the fifth book, Witness Protection Widow, but this did perfectly well as a standalone. If there are going to be future books in the series, I am more than eager to read them.

Many thanks to Harlequin Intrigue and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Please enjoy the following excerpt:

The shower was like heaven on earth. Her body had needed the hot water so badly. Her muscles relaxed and she took her time, smoothing the soap over her skin and then shampooing her hair. She was grateful for the toiletry pack that included not only soap, shampoo and the usual, but disposable razors, as well.

By the time she was finished, her bones felt like rubber. She dried herself, slipped on underwear and the nightshirt and then used the hotel dryer to dry her hair. That part took the longest of all. When she exited the steamy bathroom the delicious aromas of room service had her stomach rumbling.

“Oh my God, that smells good.” She rushed to the table where the silver service sat. “Why aren’t you eating?”

“I was waiting for you.” He joined her at the table.

Ever the gentleman.

Halle curled her feet under her in her chair while Liam removed the covers from the dishes. Fish, chicken, vegetables. He had ordered all sorts of dishes and they all looked amazing.

“I thought we’d try a little of everything.”

A bottle of white wine as well as a bottle of rosé had her licking her lips.

“I wasn’t sure which one you preferred.” He gestured to the iced-down bottles. “And I didn’t forget dessert.” The final lid revealed a heavenly-looking chocolate cake with fudge icing.

“I may die right now.” She wanted to taste it all.

“Eat first.” He placed a linen napkin over his lap and stuck his fork into a tiny, perfectly roasted potato. She watched him eat and it was the sexiest thing she had ever seen. She didn’t fight it. Surrendered to instinct and that was how they ate. No plates, just taking whatever they wanted with a fork or fingers and devouring. They drank the wine and laughed at stories from their respective childhoods. From all the stories he’d told her, she could not wait to meet his sister, Claire.

By the time they were finished, she was feeling a little tipsy. The food was mostly gone and both bottles were drained. She felt more relaxed than she had in decades. They had discussed the day’s events and Burke and Austen—and Derrick. The man was still convinced she had a thing for Derrick. No way. She’d also told him what her mom had to say about any friends from Nashville the Clarks might have had, which was none who ever appeared at their door. She and Liam agreed that was somewhat unusual considering how social the Clarks had been in Winchester.

“You know,” she said, after polishing off the last of the wine in her glass, “I wrote you dozens of letters.”

“Me?”

She frowned and shook her head. “Andy.” Then she stared at him. “No. You. I mean you. Whatever you believe, I know you’re him.”

“Okay.” He laughed, his eyes glittering with the soft sound.

God, his mouth was sexy when he was relaxed. She put her hand to her mouth just to make sure she hadn’t said the words out loud.

“Tell me about the letters,” he prompted.

“I told you what was going on in Winchester. Who was doing what at school. I even put pictures with the letters.” She laughed. Placed her glass on the table. “It was silly, I know. But I wanted to still feel you and that was the only way I could.”

She blinked. He had moved. He was suddenly next to her, on his knees, staring into her eyes, and her breath caught.

“I don’t know if I’m this Andy you loved so much when you were a kid,” he said softly, so softly she shivered, “but I would really like to be the guy you care about now.”

Her heart swelled into her throat. She started to suggest that it was the wine talking, but it wasn’t. The truth was in his eyes. Those blue eyes she knew as well as her own. And despite her wine consumption, she was stone-cold sober as she considered what could happen between them tonight.

“I’m really glad, because I would hate to think I’m in this alone,” she confessed.

He kissed her so sweetly that tears stung her eyes. Then he stood and pulled her into his arms. He carried her to the nearest bed.

No matter what happened tomorrow, she would always cherish this night.

Review - You Are Not Alone

Title:   You Are Not Alone
Author:  Greer Hendricks, Sarah Pekkanan
Genre:   Psychological Thriller
Publisher:   St. Martin's Press
Format:  Kindle ARC
No. of Pages:  352
Date of Publication:  March 3, 2020
My Rating:  5 Stars

DESCRIPTION:

You probably know someone like Shay Miller.

She wants to find love, but it eludes her.
She wants to be fulfilled, but her job is a dead end.
She wants to belong, but her life is so isolated.

You probably don’t know anyone like the Moore sisters.

They have an unbreakable circle of friends.
They live the most glamorous life.
They always get what they desire.

Shay thinks she wants their life.
But what they really want is hers

MY THOUGHTS:

Shay uses logic to survive. Numbers. Statistics. Put it all together and everything makes sense. She learns that simply is not always true. Her boyfriend cheated on her and she lost her job. She is a third wheel when her roommate's girlfriend finds her in the way. Shay certainly has a lot to figure out.

When she witnesses a woman who jumps in front of a train, she cannot get over it and starts pursing any details or facts that she can. She even attends the memorial service of the victim. She meets the woman's friends, Cassandra and Jane, sisters who definitely are not who they seem.

This fast-paced book by Hendricks and Pekkanen is a thrilling read. Lies and danger dog Shay’s every footstep. Has she gone too far in trying to get to the bottom of the suicide? Needless to say, the twists and turns kept me scratching my head. As sharp as Shay is when it comes to numbers and statistics, using these skills were no match against the true facts and her own safety.

I felt going in with this third book by the amazing dynamic duo that it would be a five star read. I am thrilled to say that my prediction was on point. I know I have a long wait ahead of me, but I cannot see the next book they deliver to readers.

Many thanks to St. Martin's Press and to NetGalley for this ARC to review in exchange for my honest opinion.

Review - The Prince of Broadway

Author:  Joanna Shupe
Series:  Uptown Girls #2
Genre:   Historical Romance
Publisher:   Avon
Format:  Kindle ARC
No. of Pages:  384
Date of Publication:  December 30, 2019
My Rating:  4 Stars

DESCRIPTION:

In the second novel in Joanna Shupe's the Uptown Girl series, a ruthless casino owner bent on revenge finds his plans upended by a beautiful woman who proves to be more determined than he is—and too irresistible to deny.

Powerful casino owner.
Ruthless mastermind.
Destroyer of men.

He lives in the shadows...

As the owner of the city's most exclusive casino, Clayton Madden holds the fortunes of prominent families in the palms of his hands every night. There is one particular family he burns to ruin, however, one that has escaped his grasp... until now.

She is society's darling...

Florence Greene is no one's fool. She knows Clayton Madden is using her to ruin her prestigious family... and she's using him right back. She plans to learn all she can from the mysterious casino owner—then open a casino of her own just for women.

With revenge on his mind, Clay agrees to mentor Florence. However, she soon proves more adept—and more alluring—than Clay bargained for. When his plans are threatened, Clay must decide if he is willing to gamble his empire on love.

MY THOUGHTS:

Clayton Madden has a take no prisoners attitude when it comes to his ownership of an exclusive casino. As a matter of fact, despite his powerful ownership he wants more. In truth, he wants revenge. When he is done he will own it all.

Meanwhile, Florence Greene is a woman with big ideas. She wants to learn the business of running a casino so that women can enjoy the same advantages as men in this area. She approaches Clayton with hopes of him teaching her everything she needs to know. Little does Florence know is the fact that Clayton Madden has every intention on ruining her family.

Business first, right? Despite their separate objectives, Clayton and Florence have an incredible attraction to one another. How can their desires be met when in truth they are at cross purposes?

Both Clayton and Florence were remarkable characters. I loved the fact that Florence snubbed her nose at society's rules in order for the sake of fairness of women. Clayton impressed me because he had something that drove his desire to ruin Florence's family, and this actually led to some emotionally sensitive moments in this book. I loved this book and look forward to continuing this series.

Although The Prince of Broadway is the second book in the Uptown Girls series, it runs parallel to the first book, The Rogue of Fifth Avenue, which lends to the continuity that exists between the two books. The next book in the series is The Devil of Downtown, which is set for release in June.

Many thanks to Avon and to Edelweiss for this ARC to review in exchange for my honest opinion.

BLOG TOUR - Revelations of a Secret Princess

DESCRIPTION:

To find her precious daughter, stolen from her at birth, Princess Carolina will do anything. Including masquerading as a nanny! Jake Maynard, her daughter’s uncle, is all that’s standing in the way of the reunion Caro has yearned for. If only her body got the message he’s the enemy…

Caro knows this powerful billionaire won’t give up the only family he has left. Yet after years of emotional numbness, Jake is reawakening her! He shows Caro a life filled with passion, not protocol, but what will happen when Jake discovers her true identity?

MY THOUGHTS:

Title:   Revelations of a Secret Princess
Author:  Annie West
Publisher:  Harlequin Presents
Genre:   Romance
Format:  Kindle ARC
No. of Pages:   224
Date of Publication:   March 1, 2020
My Rating:   4 Stars

Princess Carolina will go to any means to find her daughter. She learns that the little one is the ward of her uncle Jake Maynard. Posing as a nanny, Caro begins to know her daughter Ariane, and falls in love with her at first sight.

Jake is a billionaire and has always had his mind focused on business. Known as a man who takes no prisoners, he is the full-time guardian of little Ariane. is drawn to the new nanny, but as far as he is concerned, he is focused on taking care Ariane. His main reason for hiring Caro is because she speaks the language of her heritage. Thus Caro qualifies. Beyond the spark that exists between the both of them, what will he do when he finds out the new nanny is a Princess? Furthermore, why did Caro lose Ariane in the first place?

What a touching story! It has been years since I have read a Harlequin Presents. I loved this book for several reasons. I love the page count of these books. Revelations of a Secret Princess is a sweet book that proved to be a quick and delightful read. This is a very loving story and it is one I would certainly recommend.

Many thanks to Harlequin for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Please enjoy the following excerpt:

‘Jake, did you say it was St Ancilla Caro went to?’

Reluctantly Jake looked up from his emails. This project grew more complex by the hour and he wasn’t devoting as much time to it as he should. He’d spent the morning with Ariane.

On the other hand, his niece’s ease with him felt like victory. He owed her thawing, in part, to Caro, who’d done an amazing job in a short time. He’d been right to hire her.

Neil sank into the chair on the other side of his desk. His expression was unreadable, yet the fine hairs on the back of Jake’s neck stood to attention.

‘That’s right. What’s happened?’

Jake leaned back in his chair. A tough early life, a stint in the army then years devoted to wheeling and dealing in the turbulent field of international finance meant it took a lot to unnerve him.

‘I tracked down another on our list of potential investors and discovered they were in St Ancilla for a big event.’ Neil passed his tablet across the desk. It displayed a news article. If you could call it real news. Some royal event.

‘So? Wait a few days then make contact.’

‘Check out the photo. The second one.’

Jake looked again, scrolling past a photo of a young, formally dressed couple smiling at the camera with all the animation of marionettes. Prince Paul of St Ancilla and Princess Eva of Tarentia, just engaged.

Beneath was a group photo. An ornate balcony on an imposing building, crammed with elegant women and men in heavily decorated dress uniforms.

‘And?’ Jake had no interest in aristocracy. He did business with them but his personal experiences with them hadn’t been happy. First had been the entitled foreigner who’d lured his mother away, on condition she abandon her kids. Then just months ago, his own girlfriend suggested he put Ariane in an orphanage rather than bother with her. Both had been uncaring of anyone else, expecting the world to revolve around them.

‘Look closely. The one in blue.’

Jake frowned. Several of those uniforms were blue, plus a blonde in ice blue and…

He stared. It couldn’t be.

Of course it couldn’t. The woman in the deep blue dress was a vibrant redhead, not a brunette. Yet Jake felt adrenaline burst into his blood with a jolt.

He zoomed in on the woman, amazed at the likeness.

‘Princess Carolina of St Ancilla. The King’s eldest child.’ Neil’s voice was flat with suppressed excitement.

‘Princess Carolina?’ Carolina. Caro.

No. It was impossible. Mere coincidence.

Yet the buzz in Jake’s bloodstream didn’t abate.

‘Yes, but she’s not his heir. Her younger brother is. Carolina isn’t in the limelight these days. She lives fairly quietly in the north of the island though she’s very active in a number of charities, especially relating to children.’ Jake peered at the woman. She was a ringer for Caro, except for the clothes and hair. And the royal connections.

‘Maybe our Caro is a distant relative.’

Our Caro? His choice of words made her sound—

‘There’s more.’ Neil took the device and opened another page, handing it back. With his usual efficiency he’d collated a precis on the woman. The Princess had a string of names, had been born almost twenty-five years ago and lost her mother early.

Her father had remarried when she was two and she had three half-brothers. She’d studied in the US but didn’t finish her degree. There’d been a scandal. He read headlines about wild parties and drug use. Jake wasn’t surprised. Most of Fiona’s privileged friends preferred parties to work. What did surprise him was that after returning to St Ancilla, Princess Carolina had all but dropped off the radar. She didn’t live in the palace, merely appearing in the press at charity events or major royal celebrations like this, her half-brother’s engagement.

He scrolled lower, studying the shots Neil had collected. Stiff and formal on the same balcony with her family when she was a little girl. Again in her teens, looking almost gawky despite her expensive clothes and with her flame-colored hair now turning auburn, her head turned towards her father, her expression curiously closed. A shot of her with one of her brothers, both smiling for the camera but neither looking happy.

Jake began to feel almost sorry for her. Had the wild partying been rebellion after an unhappy childhood?

Then he scrolled lower and his breath caught.

This photo was different. Candid. He doubted she knew it had been taken. She wore casual clothes, her hair in a ponytail and she was in a crowd with other young people. At a party, by the look of it. She was half turned away, looking over her shoulder, but there was no mistaking the warmth in her expression as she smiled at someone beyond the camera. Her eyes, a remarkable deep violet, glowed. She glowed. Jake felt the impact of her joy judder through him.

He swallowed, mesmerized by those eyes. They were so like Ariane’s that for a moment everything, his pulse and his breathing, seemed to stop. He’d always thought the color rare. Maybe not so on St Ancilla.

He touched the screen, enlarged the photo and then his breath really did stop.

There, on the back of her shoulder next to the strap of her top, was a small birthmark shaped like a comma.

Jake had seen that mark three nights ago.

It had peeked out beneath the strap of a grey camisole when he’d held Caro in his arms.

SPRING 2020 Bookish Blog Hop - Last Book Read

Bookish Blog Hops' Spring Hop Day 2:

What Was the Last Book That You Read?

At this writing, my last complete read was Quicksand by Iris Johansen, the eighth book in the Eve Duncan series. As time permits, my goal is to read at least one or two of these books monthly. There are currently 25 books in the series, with The Persuasion due out in June. My NetGalley, Edelweiss and print ARCs are toppling over, so I cannot devote as much time to this series as I would like. I have the latest hardcover books as ARCs, and it is rather hard to see them on my shelves. I want to read them NOW, lol.

I have read 112 books this year so far, which is 29 books ahead of schedule for my Goodreads goal of 500. No matter how many books I read, I barely make a dent in some of the series I follow. My NetGalley ratio had sit at 56% for nearly a year because there are just so many blog tour books and other title that I download monthly.

Stormi - Bewitched Reader Book Blog - www.bewitchedreader.com

The last book I read was Voyeur by Fiona Cole. This was something outside my comfort zone, so I was hesitant to read it. Forbidden romances are typically something I avoid. I tend to stick to the angsty, sweeter romances or fantasy reads. I’m glad to say Voyeur surprised me and I enjoyed stepping outside of my reading comfort zone this time.

Erica Robyn - Erica Robyn Reads - www.ericarobynreads.com

The last book that I read before writing up my response for this post was a short story collection organized by Kevin J Kennedy called Made In Britain. Mr Kennedy puts together the most amazing horror short story collections! Each one has something for all types of horror fans. He even has some collections that would be great for people that aren’t quite sure how they feel about horror, but want to try it out. In Made In Britain, I loved that each story focused on one British element or another. Check out my review for Made In Britain here!

Currently it’s the middle of February as I’m writing this, but at this point in my reading adventures, I hope to have at least one, if not two books finished by the beginning of March!

According to the “reading tracker” I’ve set for myself, the last book I read was Saving Faith by David Baldacci. He’s one of my favorite authors, and his thrillers are jam-packed with marvelously relatable protagonists, devious antagonists, and colorful side characters--not to mention the very intense peril and the twists and turns each story takes! This particular one started out with plenty of intrigue--but then it also took a nose-dive into subjects I find much less inviting to read… which is mildly disappointing, to say the least… but at least it all came out all right in the end!

That’s the last print book I read--but I am also reading ebooks as well. The last ebook I read was a novella titled Grave Tidings by R. R. Virdi, as a tie-in to his series The Grave Reports--which I read and loved. It’s a “paranormal urban fantasy” series that smacks of Dresden Files and contains tons of nerdy references, from comic books to TV shows like Supernatural. Any fan of either of those is sure to adore this series!

Laura Doherty - Tales of a Natural Spoonie - https://talesofanaturalspoonie.com

As I write this its the middle of February and according to my Goodreads tracker I am smashing my 2020 reading goal. The last book I read was Mageborn by Jessica Thorne. Mageborn is the first book in a brand new fantasy series and I really enjoyed it. You can read my full review here.

I have also just finished up reading The Comparison Cure by Lucy Sheridan. I came across Lucy last year when she was running an Instagram challenge called #thegoodgram. One of things Lucy talks about a lot is how the act of comparing ourselves to others can really hinder our own development. The book really built on this and I found it super helpful in allowing me to see where I can develop as a blogger and content creator. It also allowed me to shed some of the imposter syndrome I often feel.

Jo Linsdell www.JoLinsdell.com

The last book I read was Stone Cold Heart by Caz Frear. I won this book in a giveaway on Twitter a while ago, and I’m so glad I did. It was awesome! You can see my full review for it here. If you like the crime, mystery, thriller genres, this is one you’ll want to read.

Valerie, Cats Luv Coffee www.catsluvcoffee.com

The last book I finished was Cirque Berserk by Jessica Guess. (You can see my review here.) I say finished because I’m in the middle of about six books right now. Nothing is really keeping my interest long enough to finish in one sitting. Cirque Berserk is a novella, and really channels the horror movies of the ‘80s.

Veronica - The Burgeoning Bookshelf https://theburgeoningbookshelf.blogspot.com/

The last book I read was The Gilded Cage by Camilla Lackberg due to be released in April 2020. The story was a bit like coming across a train wreck. I couldn’t look away. It was disturbing but I couldn’t stop reading. I simply had to know what was  going to happen next. The main character was unlikeable and had no redeeming qualities at all.
