MY THOUGHTS:

In this newly published novel by Debra Webb, Ryan McBride is forced to confront both his past and his demons when he is pulled back into the FBI, something he thought was long behind him. Once a dedicated and highly respected Special Agent, McBride’s career ended abruptly when a case went terribly wrong. Now, three years later, he’s asked to help find a kidnapped six-year-old girl whose captor has issued a chilling 24-hour deadline.

Teamed up with Special Agent Vivian Grace, McBride quickly realizes that this is no ordinary kidnapping. The criminal has a calculated agenda, turning the investigation into a high-stakes game just might have deadly consequences. As the clock ticks down, McBride and Grace race against time, navigating both the danger of the case and the personal demons it forces them to confront.

McBride’s absence from the FBI has taken a heavy toll—he’s become a deeply flawed and struggling man, including becoming a drunk. With each successive kidnapping occurring in rapid succession, the danger escalates, and McBride is forced to face a series of tests posed by the kidnapper to save the victims before it’s too late.

This novel features a compelling, imperfect hero. These flaws make him all the more human and engaging. I’ve become a definite fan of Debra Webb’s work, and The Devoted Game only reinforces why. It’s a gripping, emotionally charged thriller that kept me turning pages, and I’m eager to read more from this author.

Many thanks to Thomas & Mercer and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
